Conference USA Game of the Week

No. 4 Nebraska 20, Southern Miss 13
Linebacker Julius Jackson returned a fumble and an interception for touchdowns as Nebraska's defense made up for a poor offensive showing at home.

Southern Miss (2-1) outgained Nebraska 293 to 183 and threatened to tie it with 1:17 left in the game, but Keyuo Craver intercepted Jeff Kelly at the Nebraska 1-yard line and the Huskers (3-0) avoided the upset. It was Craver's second interception of the game.

Other Conference USA action

Cincinnati 17, No. 9 Wisconsin 12
Robert Cooper ran for 143 yards and a touchdown, and Deontey Kenner scored on a 5-yard run as the Bearcats shocked the visiting Badgers, spoiling a record-setting performance by Ron Dayne.

Dayne carried 28 times for 231 yards to pass Archie Griffin to became the Big Ten's career rushing leader with 5,615 yards, including bowl games ... but it would be his fumble inside the UC 1-yard line in the fourth quarter that was most significant on this day. Dayne moved into sixth place on the NCAA career rushing list. He has 5,087 regular-season yards, 1,193 shy of breaking Ricky Williams' NCAA career mark.

The Cincinnati victory was especially stunning in light of the fact that the Bearcats had lost to Troy State, a Div. I-AA team. In addition to Dayne's fourth-quarter fumble, Wisconsin's Nick Davis fumbled away a fourth-quarter punt that led to a Cincinnati field goal, and the Badgers had an apparent game-winning touchdown pass called back by penalty in the final seconds.

Tulane 48, Army 23
Tulane exploded for 22 points in the third quarter to turn a competitive game into a laugher. Green Wave QB Patrick Ramsey completed 34 of 49 passes for 447 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.
East Carolina 21, South Carolina 3
ECU QB David Garrard threw for one TD and ran for another as the Pirates added a win over the SEC's Gamecocks to the ones they picked up against a couple of other BCS conference teams -- West Virginia out of the Big East and Duke out of the ACC. Kevin Monroe opened the scoring for ECU, returning a fumble 2 yards for a first quarter TD.
Illinois 41, Louisville 36
After a long period of futility, Illinois moved to 3-0 by outlasting the high-flying Cardinals in Louisville. When QB Chris Redman found TE Ibn Green for a first-quarter TD, the Cardinals led 10-0 and appeared on their way. Defense, however, proved to be the hosts downfall, as Illinois' QB Kurt Kittner beat Redman at his own game, throwing four scoring passes, including a 49-yarder to Brandon Lloyd with 2:13 to play that sealed the deal.
Houston 45, Louisiana-Lafayette 0
Houston's defense kept the Ragin' Cajuns deep in an offensive coma and the Cougars offense had no trouble bouncing back from last week's loss to Alabama. ULL kept the score respectable at the half, 17-0, but was snowed under a 28-point Houston barrage in the third quarter and went quietly to its third loss to open the season. The Cajuns, under first-year coach Jerry Baldwin, have yet to score an offensive TD.
Memphis 31, Arkansas State 26
Arkansas State QB Cleo Lemon threw two TD passes in the last seven minutes, but could not push the Indians past the host Tigers, who had scored just 13 points in their previous two games.
