MAC Game of the Week

Marshall 35, Bowling Green 16
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead, but Marshall scored 14 quick points to seize control of the game and was in charge all evening. Marshall QB Chad Pennington didn't have a spectacular night, but did hit on 15 of his 31 attempts for 257 yards.

Other MAC action

No. 14 Purdue 58, Central Michigan 16
Receiver-punt returner Vinny Sutherland accounted for 306 all-purpose yards, and Drew Brees passed for 320 yards in less than three quarters of work as Purdue improved to 3-0 for the first time since 1969.

Sutherland set a school record with 142 yards in punt returns (including a 64-yard touchdown), caught seven passes for 134 yards, and rushed for 30 more on three end-around runs. Travis Dorsch had field goals of 26, 20 and 47 yards for Purdue, which starts Big Ten play against Northwestern on Saturday. Central Michigan is 1-2.

Pittsburgh 30, Kent 23
A week after taking Penn State to the wire, the Panthers ventured into the MAC and struggled mightily with the Golden Flashes. Kent, which had dropped games to Navy and Cincinnati by a combined 89-31 in their previous games, forged a 10-10 tie at halftime and never went away.

Junior RB Kevan Barlow was the difference for the Panthers. He broke a 61-yard scoring run in the second quarter and put the game away for Pitt by breaking a 57-yarder in the fourth. He carried 20 times for 206 yards, a big departure from his first two games, in which he gained a mere 52 yards.

Toledo 23, Ball State 10
The Rockets led 10-0 at the half and stretched it to 13-0 in the third before the Cardinals responded. By then it was too late, as coach Gary Pinkel's team played ball-control, gaining 257 yards on 50 carries and completing 14 of 20 passes without a turnover. Meanwhile, the Rockets' defense amassed six sacks.
Miami (Ohio) 35, Eastern Michigan 14
Travis Prentice scored three first-quarter touchdowns and Sly Johnson added another on a 94-yard pass from Mike Bath as the RedHawks led 28-0 after one quarter. They then settled in and cruised home against the reeling Eagles.
Akron 25, Temple 15
After getting shut out in their first two games, the Owls managed to score against the Zips. The only problem was that it didn't happen until the fourth quarter and by then Akron held a 25-0 lead and was not about to be reeled in.
Ohio State 40, Ohio 6
Michael Wiley scored two touchdowns and Steve Bellisari hit Ken-Yon Rambo with two scoring passes as the Buckeyes overcame a sluggish first half to roll. Ohio State (2-1) hasn't lost to an in-state college since falling to Oberlin 7-6 in 1921. Yet, the 43-point underdog Bobcats (0-3) -- a team that lost to Division I-AA Northern Iowa at home last week -- held a 10-3 lead late in the second quarter after Chad Brinker's 3-yard run.

That in itself was a victory. OSU, though, scored touchdowns with its first two possessions after halftime, and went on to outscore Ohio 30-6 in the second half. The Bobcats and Buckeyes had met four times from 1899-1902, with Ohio State winning by a combined 95-0.

Iowa 24, Northern Illinois 0
On Hayden Fry Day in Iowa City, Ladell Betts ran for a career-best 174 yards and a touchdown, as the Hawkeyes snapped a seven-game losing streak. LaVar Woods dashed 87 yards with a blocked punt for an Iowa touchdown, and Randy Reiners returned to the starting quarterback spot and ran for one, too. The Hawkeyes (1-2) gave Kirk Ferentz his first victory as Iowa's coach, and Northern Illinois (0-3) has lost seven straight and is 3-33 in four seasons under coach Joe Novak.
Connecticut 23, Buffalo 0
The Bulls came close to pulling off a win over Akron last week, but got hammered by the Division I-AA Huskies in Storrs. The game marked Connecticut's first win of the year.
Missouri 48, Western Michigan 34
A 24-point second quarter was all the Tigers needed to bust open a close game and put the Broncos away. The Tigers controlled the game with their offense, eating up 36:50 of the clock and keeping Bronco QB Tim Lester on the sideline. Senior RB DeVaughn Black did the bulk of the damage for Larry Smith's Tigers, picking up 205 yards on 32 carries. He now has 345 yards in two games.
