Game of the Week

Stanford 50, No. 19 Arizona 22
What a mess this Pac-10 is turning out to be. Let's see… Stanford loses to Texas by 52 points … then outscores its first two Pac-10 opponents by 104-39, including a four-touchdown rout of the consensus favorite to win the league title?

That's it, as Todd Husak threw for 364 yards and freshman Kerry Carter rushed for three touchdowns Saturday night as Stanford went into Arizona Stadium and embarrassed the Wildcats (2-2), whose entire season is in jeopardy. First, they were supposed to be a candidate for the Sugar Bowl, but Penn State took care of that in the opener. And now, in their Pac-10 opener, they get thoroughly blown out again.

The Cardinal (2-1 overall, 2-0 Pac-10) rolled for 580 yards against a team that had been the overwhelming preseason favorite for the Pac-10 title.

Other Pac-10 action

No. 17 USC 24, San Diego State 21
But the 17th-ranked Trojans, favored by 23 points, were taken to the wire in edging the Aztecs (1-2). "We thought it would be an easy one; it wasn't," said Carson Palmer, who threw two touchdown passes -- but who had a fourth-quarter pass intercepted and returned 62 yards for a touchdown, making the game close.

"We dodged a bullet and found out that we have to play every week like it's our last game," said Hackett, whose 2-0 team visits Oregon next week. "We wanted to play a close game. This took it to the extreme." The Trojans had beaten Hawaii, 62-7, and led San Diego State, 17-0, before the Aztecs came back.

No. 21 UCLA 35, Fresno State 21
The Bulldogs appeared to be ready to shock the Bruins in the early going (just like all Pac-10 teams are getting shocked these days). But UCLA settled down when Drew Bennett -- demoted this week in favor of redshirt freshman Cory Paus -- came on after the freshman was sidelined with bruised ribs. Bennett was 13 of 24 for 176 yards and two touchdowns.

UCLA was at full strength for the first time after getting 10 players back on the field after they were suspended for using unauthorized disabled parking permits.

New Mexico State 35, No. 22 Arizona State 7
Reverse the score, and it would be a little more believable.

In one of the most astounding results in West Coast football in years, the Aggies scored three second-quarter touchdowns en rout to a 28-0 halftime lead, and went on to outgain the Sun Devils 568-234.

Oregon 72, Nevada 10
It was only 14-10 in the first quarter when Oregon went absolutely nuts.

Nevada (0-3) then became little more than a straight man to an Oregon team that put together the most prolific offensive day in school history. The previous record was the 63 points the Ducks put up against Stanford last year. Coming back from an injury-shortened year, Reuben Droughns had a great day, running for 110 yards on 18 carries. Seven Ducks scored TDs, including a school-record 99-yard kickoff return by Jason Cooper.

Air Force 31, Washington 21
Million-dollar coach Rick Neuheisel has yet to win with the Huskies, now 0-2 -- with both losses to Mountain West Conference teams. It's Washington's worst start since 1985.

Air Force won its 11th straight game, as quarterback Cale Bonds ran for three touchdowns. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime, but the Falcons (2-0) took advantage of Washington mistakes in the second half to beat the Huskies for the second time in less than a year (45-25 Oahu Bowl).

UW freshman Paul Arnold set a Huskies' record by returning a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown with 5:02 left after Bonds scored his third TD of the day.

Oregon State 48, Georgia Southern 41
Ken Simonton rushed for 180 yards and four touchdowns, as Oregon State needed -- and got -- 543 yards of offense and a pair of big plays on special teams to beat Division I-AA the Eagles. It is the first time the Beavers have been 3-0 since 1967. Oregon State, which has the longest winning streak in the Pac-10 at four, needs three more victories to end its NCAA-record string of 28 straight losing seasons.

Georgia Southern (2-1), the top-ranked team in I-AA, gave the Beavers all they could handle before falling to 0-12 against Division I-A programs. The Eagles tied the game at 34-all on a 20-yard field goal by Chris Chambers with 8:50 to play. Robert Prescott returned the ensuing kickoff 61 yards to set up Simonton's fourth TD. And on Georgia Southern's next possession, OSU's Darnell Robinson picked up a fumbled punt snap and ran it in for a much-needed insurance touchdown in this shootout.

Idaho 28, Washington State 17
The Cougars built a 14-0 first-half lead … and went to sleep. It was Idaho's third-string quarterback Greg Robertson who led the comeback against the struggling Cougars, who have tied a school record with 11 consecutive defeats. WSU's 14-0 lead evaporated when Mao Tosi forced a fumble that was returned 62 yards for a touchdown by LB Chris Nofoaiga. With the momentum shifted, Idaho was off to the races. Robertson hooked up with Rossi Martin for scoring tosses of 51 and 42 yards to give the Vandals their first win over the Cougars since 1965.
