Big West Game of the Week
Oregon 72, Nevada 10 |
The Wolf Pack was in trouble before QB David Neill suffered a concussion (while tackling LB Peter Sirmon on an interception return), but when he was lost for the game, Jeff Tisdel's team spent the rest of the day playing straight man to an Oregon team that put together the most prolific offensive day in school history. The previous record was the 63 points the Ducks put up against Stanford last year. Coming back from an injury-shortened year, Oregon RB Reuben Droughns had his second straight great day, running for 110 yards on 18 carries. Seven Ducks scored TDs, including a school-record 99-yard kickoff return by Jason Cooper. |
Other Big West action
Idaho 28, Washington State 17 |
With starting QB John Welsh sidelined with a broken leg and backup Ed Dean ineffective, the Vandals turned to Greg Robertson to lead them past the struggling Cougars. Down 14-0 at the half, Mao Tosi forced a fumble that was returned 62 yards for a touchdown by LB Chris Nofoaiga. With the momentum shifted, Idaho was off to the races. Robertson hooked up with Rossi Martin for scoring tosses of 51 and 42 yards to give the Vandals their first win over the Cougars since 1965. |
North Texas 21, Texas Tech 14 |
With Tech RB Ricky Williams (knee) sitting out again, the Mean Green pulled the major upset. North Texas, which hadn't scored an offensive TD in the first 10 quarters of the season, scored two in the third quarter, including a 46-yard scoring strike from Jason Attaway to Broderick McGrew. Trailing 21-7 entering the fourth quarter, Tech tightened things on a 24-yard run by Shaud Williams, but could get no closer. Jeff Rogers started the scoring for North Texas in the second quarter, scoring on a 26-yard interception return. The win was the second straight for the Mean Green in Lubbock. |
Memphis 31, Arkansas State 26 |
Arkansas State QB Cleo Lemon threw two TD passes in the last seven minutes, but could not push the Indians past the host Tigers, who had scored just 13 points in their previous two games. |
Utah 38, Utah State 18 |
The visiting Aggies staked themselves to a 10-0 lead, but could not come up with the upset. Utah State's DeMario Brown found the end zone twice, but Utah QB Darnell Arceneaux threw two TD passes and jumped his record as a starter to 8-0. |
New Mexico State 35, No. 22 Arizona State 7 |
Reverse the score, and it would be a little more believable.
In one of the most astounding results in West Coast football in years, the Aggies scored three second-quarter touchdowns en rout to a 28-0 halftime lead, and went on to outgain the Sun Devils 568-234. |
Hawaii 34, Boise State 19 | |
A week after breaking a 19-game losing streak by beating Division I-AA Eastern Illinois, the Rainbows, under first-year coach June Jones, pitched a second-half shutout at the Broncos and suddenly find themselves in the midst of a winning streak. The Broncos led 19-7 at the break, but couldn't move the ball in the second half and had no answer for Hawaii QB Dan Robinson, who threw for two fourth-quarter TDs and ran for another.
