ACC Game of the Week

No. 1 Florida State 17, Clemson 14
His son put a mighty scare into his No. 1 team, but Bobby Bowden sneaked away from Clemson with career win No. 300. Florida State had to rally from a 14-3 deficit in major college football's first father vs. son coaching matchup, but the dad's team won. With star receiver Peter Warrick back in the lineup after his legal case was favorably resolved Friday, the Seminoles were more lucky than good in beating Tommy Bowden's Tigers (3-4, 3-2 ACC) before a record crowd of 86,200 at Memorial Stadium.

Warrick caught 11 passes for 121 yards, and Sebastian Janikowksi's third field goal -- a 39-yarder with 5:26 left -- broke a 14-all tie and kept Florida State (8-0, 6-0) alive in its drive for the national championship. Clemson's bid to send the game into overtime ended when Tony Lazzara's 42-yard field goal attempt fell short with 1:57 left in the game.

The victory allowed Bobby Bowden to join Bear Bryant, Pop Warner, Amos Alonzo Stagg and Joe Paterno as the only major college coaches to reach 300 victories.

Other ACC action

N.C. State 31, Duke 24, OT
Jamie Barnette's 7-yard quarterback draw in overtime saved North Carolina State's season from slipping away. The Wolfpack (5-3, 2-3 ACC) scored 10 points over the final 7:19 of regulation and then used seven plays to score first in the extra period to beat Duke (1-6, 1-3) for the sixth straight time and nine of the last 10. Duke's Sims Lenhardt kicked a season-best 50-yard field goal as time expired to send the Blue Devils to their fourth overtime in their last nine games.

After the Wolfpack went up by seven in the extra period, Spencer Romine was sacked by Clint Johnson on Duke's first play for an 11-yard loss, and the Blue Devils couldn't recover.

Maryland 45, North Carolina 7
LaMont Jordan ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns and Maryland forced seven turnovers in handing North Carolina its worst loss in 10 years. Marlon Moore returned an interception 51 yards for a score in a 24-point first quarter, and Maryland matched its largest victory margin in a series that began in 1920.

The Terrapins (5-2, 2-2 ACC) already have matched their win total in the past two years combined … and now they need to win only one of their remaining four games against Duke, N.C. State, Florida State and Virginia to qualify for their first bowl game since 1990. The defeat assured the Tar Heels (1-6, 0-5) their first losing season since 1989.

Wake Forest 47, UAB 3
Ben Sankey ran for 108 yards and threw for 132 as Wake Forest scored 24 points in the first 11½ minutes and rolled from there. The Demon Deacons (4-3) held the Blazers (3-4) to 165 yards, only 27 rushing. The margin was Wake Forest's largest since a 66-21 rout of Virginia in 1975, and the Deacons continued toward their first winning season since 1992. UAB's first four possessions ended in a blocked punt, an interception and punts of 34 and 20 yards -- each of which gave Wake Forest the ball on the Blazers' half of the field and resulted in points.
