Big 12 Roundup
Big 12 Game of the Week
No. 18 Texas 24, No. 3 Nebraska 20 |
Major Applewhite threw for two second-half touchdowns as Texas came from behind to beat Nebraska for the third straight time. The Longhorns are 3-0 against the Cornhuskers since the Big 12 started in 1996, including last year's 20-16 victory that ended Nebraska's 47-game home winning streak and a big upset in the 1996 Big 12 title game.
Texas (6-2, 3-1) also is the only team to beat Nebraska (6-1, 3-1) three times in the '90s.
Nebraska took a 20-17 lead on quarterback Eric Crouch's 9-yard TD run with 7:52 left, but Applewhite drove Texas 60 yards on four plays on the Longhorns' next possession for the winning score -- a 17-yard pass to Mike Jones, who broke three tackles on the play. |
Other Big 12 action
No. 7 Kansas State 44, Oklahoma State 21 |
Big passing plays by Jonathon Beasley and a battering defense lifted the Wildcats from a 21-point deficit to score 44 unanswered points and win on the road. Beasley threw for 311 yards, completing 13-of-25, as the Wildcats (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) scored their 20th straight conference victory.
Oklahoma State (3-3, 1-2), inspired by the return of injured quarterback Tony Lindsay, built a 21-0 lead in the first 17 minutes. But the Cowboys crumbled under the steady pressure of a Wildcats defense that allowed only 60 yards in the second half and snagged four interceptions.
Beasley led the steady second-quarter comeback, scoring once and throwing for two TDs to tie the score. He threw for 58 and 32 yards for fourth-quarter touchdowns, as K-State rolled up 520 yards. |
Colorado 16, Iowa State 12 |
Cortlen Johnson rushed for a career-high 185 yards and Colorado made several key defensive stops in the second half to win on the road. The Buffs (4-3, 3-1 Big 12) overcame the loss of starting quarterback Mike Moschetti (migraine headaches) to beat the Cyclones (4-3, 1-3) for the 16th straight time and deal a setback to the Cyclones' bowl hopes.
Redshirt freshman Zac Colvin, making his first start, filled in capably for Moschetti and threw a touchdown pass late in the first half to give Colorado its 16-12 lead. Iowa State got 172 yards rushing from Darren Davis and threatened continually in the second half, but Colorado made the plays it needed to stop the Cyclones, intercepting two passes and turning ISU away on a fourth-and-2 and a fourth-and-1 play.

Oklahoma 51, No. 13 Texas A&M 6 |
Josh Heupel accounted for six touchdowns, leading an Oklahoma offense that befuddled the Aggies and handed Texas A&M its worst loss since 1901. Heupel (31-of-50 for 372 yards) ran for three scores, all of them sneaks, and threw one of his three touchdown passes in a 34-point first half in which the Sooners (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) scored on their first six possessions.
The Aggies (5-2, 2-2) seemed confused by Oklahoma's variety of formations and plays. The Sooners used a hook-and-lateral, successfully faked a punt and field goal, threw several shovel passes that went for big gains, and at times lined up with three receivers on each side of the field and only three interior linemen. |
Texas Tech 35, Baylor 7 |
Tech broke a win-lose-win-lose pattern by winning its second consecutive game for the first time this season. In a game dominated by defense, the Red Raiders managed only 302 total yards of offense, but shut out the Baylor offense -- giving up only a 91-yard kickoff return for the Bears' only points. Tech moved to 4-3 on the season (3-1 in Big 12 games), while Baylor slid to 1-6 (0-3). |
Kansas 21, Missouri 0 |
Moran Norris scored twice and Dylen Smith connected on a long touchdown pass for another to lead Kansas past the favored Tigers
leading fans in Lawrence, Kan., to tear down both goal posts. Missouri dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-4 in the Big 12, while Kansas (3-5, 1-3) snapped a five-game conference losing streak. |
