Mountain West Game of the Week

Brigham Young 29, UNLV 0
BYU had an easy night in Vegas, getting five field goals from Owen Pochman on something of an off night for quarterback Kevin Feterik. Pochman connected on attempts 47, 26, 28, 31 and 30 yards for BYU (6-1, 3-0 MWC), setting a school record with 17 points. Feterik was 22 of 42 for 257 yards. He threw one touchdown pass and was intercepted twice.

The Cougars held the Rebels (3-4, 1-2) to 118 yards, the second time UNLV has been shut out at home this season. The Rebels, who have lost three in a row at home, also was blanked by Iowa State 24-0 on Sept. 18.

Other Mountain West action

Utah 38, San Diego State 16
San Diego State (3-5, 1-3) kept the game tight most of the way, but 17 fourth-quarter points by the Utes allowed them to make a laugher of it and further solidify their place atop the MWC. Mike Anderson scored on runs of 26 and 32 yards for the Utes, while the Aztecs did their share to undo themselves. Utah (6-1, 3-0) turned two SDSU fumbles into TDs. Stevonne Smith added a 60-yard fumble return for a TD to the 9-yard scoring pass he caught. And Garrett Smith recovered a fumble in the end zone in the fourth quarter when the game was all but decided.

The highlight of the game for the Aztecs was a 75-yard TD connection between QB Jack Hawley and Lonny Mitchell. The loss puts an end to SDSU's slim MWC title hopes.

Colorado State 24, Wyoming 13
A low-scoring game in the first half, the defenses loosened up and Colorado State was able to outgun the Cowboys down the stretch. With just over 8 minutes to go, Matt Newton hit Will Layne with a 30-yard TD pass to give the Rams a 17-13 lead. Then, with just over 2 minutes to go and Wyoming trying to put together a potential game-winning drive, Aaron Sprague picked off a Jay Stoner pass and took it 41 yards to paydirt, sealing the deal.

The victory was especially sweet for Colorado State (4-3, 1-2), which had lost two straight, including a home date to San Diego State last week. It was another frustrating offensive day for coach Dana Dimel's Cowboys (4-3, 1-2), who have lost two of their last three. That stretch includes a win over Louisiana-Monroe and a loss to UNLV.
