Pac-10 Game of the Week

Stanford 35, Southern California 31
Stanford continued its surprising run atop the Pac-10 with a wild come-from-behind victory, sealed when Tim Smith picked off a Mike Van Raaphorst pass near the goal line as time ran out. The Cardinal (5-2, 5-0) was in trouble early, falling behind 21-0, but for the second week in a row USC squandered a 21-0 lead. The Trojans lost to Notre Dame 25-24 a week ago.

As usual, Stanford got it done with offense. Todd Husak was 20 of 32 for 290 yards and two touchdowns (as well as three interceptions) and he ran for the go-ahead score. Brian Allen ran for 121 yards on 15 carries for the Cardinal, which also played its usual brand of defense. Stanford entered with the league's worst defense and gave up 587 yards to USC, which sank further in the Pac-10 standings at 3-4 overall, 1-3 in the league.

Other Pac-10 action

Washington 31, California 27
Washington overcame a two-touchdown deficit -- and quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo's five turnovers -- to remain a serious contender for the Pac-10 title. The Huskies (4-3, 3-1 Pac-10) got two fourth-quarter touchdown from Maurice Shaw, including a go-ahead 2-yard score with 50 seconds left. Cal led 24-10 with 10:45 left in the third quarter, but the Huskies rallied to tie the game with consecutive touchdowns. Later, a Tuiasosopo interception led to Mark Jensen's 22-yard field goal and a 27-24 Cal lead with 6:50 left, but Tuiasosopo responded with a game-winning drive. Washington has won 17 in a row over Cal (3-4, 2-2).
Oregon State 55, UCLA 7
Jonathan Smith passed for three touchdowns and ran for one as Oregon State routed UCLA and gained renewed hope of ending its NCAA-record streak of 28 straight losing seasons. Oregon State (4-3, 1-3 Pac-10) had lost three in a row, but now needs two victories in its last four games for its first winning record since going 6-5 in 1970.

UCLA (3-5, 1-4) sank to last place in the Pac-10 with its second straight horrendous performance. The Bruins had just 210 yards, a week after gaining 168 in a 17-0 home loss to Cal. Smith was 15 of 34 for 261 yards for the Beavers, whose last home victory over the Bruins came in 1989.

Arizona State 33, Washington State 21
J.R. Redmond ran for three touchdowns and gained 102 of his 165 rushing yards in the second half as Arizona State rallied over Washington State. Ryan Kealy threw a 1-yard pass to Todd Heap for the Sun Devils' other TD, and Stephen Baker kicked field goals of 37 and 48 yards. He had a 51-yarder wiped out by a penalty.

Deon Burnett scored on an 11-yard run and Steve Birnbaum threw an 11-yard pass to Leaford Hackett and scored on a 1-yard keeper as the Cougars (2-5, 1-3 Pac-10) built a 21-10 lead in the second quarter. Redmond brought back the Sun Devils (4-3, 3-1) with scoring runs of 2, 6 and 3 yards and Arizona State toughened on defense in the second half, allowing Birnbaum just two completions in eight attempts in the final two quarters.

Oregon 44, Arizona 41
Mark McDonald, who had made only 1 of 9 field goal previous field goal attempts and who had missed an extra point earlier in the game, was wide left from 45 yards in the final seconds as Oregon held on to beat Arizona. The Ducks got four field goals from Josh Frankel, including a 32-yarder with 1:04 to play as Oregon snapped a seven-game road losing streak. Reuben Droughns rushed for 202 yards on a school record 45 carries for the Oregon (4-3, 2-2 Pac-10), which overcame a big-play night for Arizona. Three Wildcats had touchdown runs of 65, 80 and 60 yards. But a safety on the game's first play and a crucial missed extra point doomed Arizona (4-3, 2-2).
