SEC Game of the Week

No. 5 Tennessee 21, No. 10 Alabama 7
Tee Martin ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third to lead Tennessee in its first game in Tuscaloosa in 69 years. The Vols (5-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) have now won five straight over the Crimson Tide (5-2, 4-1).

The game was a defensive struggle until Martin led Tennessee on a game-breaking, fourth-quarter drive -- an 84-yard, 11-play drive capped by his 21-yard touchdown run to give the Vols a two-touchdown lead.

Tennessee continued a season-long streak of not allowing a back to rush for 100 yards or score a touchdown. Alabama tailback Shaun Alexander had 98 yards rushing (breaking a streak of six 100-yard games) and scored his only touchdown of the day on a 26-yard pass from Andrew Zow, who missed part of the game with a sprained ankle.

Other SEC action

No. 14 Georgia 49, Kentucky 34
Quincy Carter passed for 304 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 87 as the Bulldogs used big plays offensively, defensively and on special teams to outscore the visiting Wildcats. Carter connected with Terrence Edwards on a 20-yard scoring play in the second quarter and opened the third period with an 80-yarder to Brett Millican.

Georgia (6-1, 4-1 SEC) took a quick 14-0 lead on the Wildcats (5-3, 3-2) on a blocked punt by Kendrell Bell and a failed fourth-down fake punt by Kentucky. Next week, Georgia faces Florida in their annual rivalry game in Jacksonville, Fla., while Kentucky takes the week off while trying to figure out how to get the one more victory it'll take to qualify for a bowl game.

No. 12 Mississippi State 17, LSU 16
Rod Gibson plunged in from a yard out with 1:39 left to allow the Bulldogs to avoid another upset… snapping a seven-game losing streak to the Tigers. Gibson's touchdown on fourth down capped a 14-play, 65-yard drive as Mississippi State reached 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the SEC for the first time in school history.

Wayne Madkin was just 11-of-27 before the final drive, but connected on 3-of-4 on the winning drive, including a 20-yard pass to freshman Terrell Grindle on third-and-9, and a 5-yard screen pass to Gibson one play before the touchdown. After Gibson's touchdown, LSU (2-5, 0-5) drove to the Mississippi State 46 before Pig Prather picked off a pass.

Vanderbilt 11, South Carolina 10
Greg Zolman threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Todd Yoder with 7:16 left as Vanderbilt edged the hapless Gamecocks, extending the nation's longest losing streak to 18 games. That's the longest losing streak in SEC history. The Commodores (5-3, 2-3 SEC) moved within one victory of bowl eligibility. They haven't played in a bowl game since 1982.

The Gamecocks (0-8, 0-6) had a chance to send the game into overtime, but Steve Florio missed a 46-yard field goal with 1:04 left and South Carolina trailing 11-8. Vanderbilt took a safety on the last play of the game for the final score. Lou Holtz's team, which has scored only five offensive touchdowns this season, scored its 10 points on two safeties and two field goals.
