WAC Game of the Week

Rice 42, TCU 21
The Horned Frogs scored the first two TDs of the game, but then rolled over and died as Rice (5-3, 4-0) rattled off 35 straight points to seize control of the WAC with three games left to play. TCU (3-3, 2-1) led 14-0 after a quarter of play, but then the floodgates swung open and Rice, known more for its defense, put its offense on the arm and legs of QB Chad Richardson. The 5-foot-11 senior ran for a 6-yard TD and threw for scores of 23 and 39 yards. When Dan Dawson returned an interception 30 yards for a TD, the Owls had a 35-7 lead and the Frogs were dead.

TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson, the nation's leading rusher, carried 19 times for 133 yards to increase his season total to 1,193 yards. Richardson rushed for 163 yards on 28 carries, and completed 3 of 6 passes for 74 yards.

Other WAC action

Hawaii 35, Tulsa 21
A year after failing to win a game, the Rainbow Warriors (5-2, 3-1 WAC) moved a step closer to a bowl bid, going into Tulsa and handling the reeling Golden Hurricane (1-6, 0-4 WAC). Tulsa did manage to score first when John Mosley banked an 8-yard TD run. Hawaii answered with three TDs of its own and went into the break up 21-7. Tulsa failed to mount a serious challenge in the second half, falling further back as Hawaii QB Dan Robinson aired it out for his two TD passes of the day -- both to Craig Stutzmann.
Fresno State 24, Texas-El Paso 23, OT
Billy Volek threw three touchdown passes and Fresno State stopped Texas-El Paso's two-point conversion try in overtime to beat the Miners. Fresno State (5-3, 2-1 WAC) took a 24-17 lead in overtime on a 6-yard scoring pass from Volek to Paris Gaines. Texas-El Paso (3-5, 1-2) answered with a 10-yard TD pass from Jay Stuckey to Brian Natkin and then went for the two-point conversion.

Stuckey passed to Elzie Johnson coming out of the backfield but FresnoState's Giachino Chiaramonte stopped Johnson a yard short of the goal line. Trailing 17-6 deficit in the third quarter, UTEP rallied to tie the game on a 28-yard field goal by Ricky Bishop and a 1-yard scoring run by Paul Smith, followed by a two-point conversion pass from Stuckey to Natkin with 20 seconds left in the third quarter. UTEP had a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter but Smith was stripped of the ball at the Fresno 4-yard line and Chiaramonte recovered for the Bulldogs.

SMU (1-5, 1-2) at San Jose State (3-4, 1-2), POSTPONED
Scheduled for a 9 p.m. (ET) start, the game was delayed because of an electrical problem in San Jose and has been postponed. No makeup date has been scheduled. The timing is right for San Jose State, which has been struggling since the injury to Deonce Whitaker and can use the night off to get their junior scatback healthy.
