Notable games

2000: Florida 34, Georgia 23
Gators' Palmer/Grossman combo too much for UGa
The Gators forced some key turnovers and Jesse Palmer and Rex Grossman each threw a touchdown pass in a 34-23 win over Georgia. Grossman threw a first quarter touchdown pass to Jabar Gaffney, but was replaced by senior Jesse Palmer after throwing his third interception. Palmer fumbled to set up a Georgia touchdown, but then recovered from the turnover and threw a touchdown pass to Robert Gillespie before going in from one yard out on a quarterback sneak.

The 'Dogs made it interesting in the fourth quarter, as Quincy Carter threw a touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal to cut the Gator lead to 27-23. Georgia was on the march again later in the fourth quarter, but Carter fumbled the ball after being sandwiched between Florida's Alex Brown and Clint Mitchell to put and end to the threat.

1999: Florida 30, Georgia 14
Bulldogs fumble away opportunities
With the go-ahead touchdown in their sights, Georgia's Jasper Sanks fumbled, allowing Florida to gain momentum and eventually put the game away with touchdowns on their next two possessions. The game was played in a steady rain, and the weather took its toll on Quincy Carter, who despite two rushing touchdowns, was held to just 76 passing yards and was sacked and fumbled on his own one-yard line to set up the Gators' final score.

About the rivalry

The Florida-Georgia series ranks as one of college football's greatest rivalries. It's so intense, in fact, the two schools even argue about when the series began.

Georgia boasts a 45-32-2 series advantage, which includes a 52-0 triumph in 1904. But Florida doesn't recognize that game and insists the series started in 1915. Either way, the two schools have met every year since 1926, except for 1943, when the Gators did not field a team.

The weekend of the game has become known as "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party." Often, the game, annually played at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., is as wild as the tail-gating; since 1961, the game has been decided by 7 or fewer points 18 times.

Florida (1990-96) and Georgia (1941-48) both boast seven-game winning streaks in the series.

The series is the third longest in the Georgia record books, falling behind the Bulldogs' series against Auburn (103 games) and Georgia Tech (92). The Florida-Georgia series is the longest in the Gators' record books.

Steve Spurrier is 10-1 vs. Georgia.
