ACC Game of the Week

Virginia 45, No. 7 Georgia Tech 38
David Rivers, making his first college start, played like a Heisman contender and Georgia Tech's Joe Hamilton didn't, as the former long snapper led Virginia to a stunning victory. Rivers, miserable when pressed into his first significant action last week against top-ranked Florida State, rallied Virginia (5-4, 4-3 ACC) from a 17-0 first-quarter deficit with three touchdown passes and nearly mistake-free play.

Hamilton, among the Heisman Trophy front-runners, struggled against an inspired Virginia defense in the second half and could not rally the Yellow Jackets after the Cavaliers went ahead to stay with 12:15 left in the game. Georgia Tech (6-2, 4-2) likely lost a spot as an at-large team in the Bowl Championship Series with its fourth straight loss in Scott Stadium.

Rivers, the Cavaliers' long snapper on punts until this week, completed 18-of-30 for 228 yards, with one interception. Thomas Jones, whose own Heisman hopes were dashed by the Cavaliers poor showing this season, rushed for 213 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries.

Other ACC action

Clemson 58, Duke 7
Travis Zachery ran for four touchdowns and Brandon Streeter threw for two as Clemson, with its biggest output since 1990, when it posted a 59-0 victory over Long Beach State. The Tigers (5-4, 5-2 ACC) took control early and didn't let up on the Blue Devils (2-7, 2-4), leading 21-0 after one quarter and 31-7 at halftime.

They also dominated defensively with three interceptions and eight sacks. Sophomore linebacker Keith Adams had five sacks, giving him a Clemson-record 11 this season, and Robert Carswell had two interceptions. Defensive end Terry Jolly scored on a 20-yard interception return in the third quarter. Streeter, making his first start since breaking his collarbone Oct. 2 against North Carolina, threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Mal Lawyer in the first half and an 18-yarder to Brian Wofford in the second half. Zachery scored on runs of 14, 8 and 9 yards in the half, then added a tackle-breaking 44-yard run in the second half, his longest of the season.

N.C State 30, Maryland 17
Jamie Barnette threw for two touchdowns to set an ACC career record and Kent Passingham kicked three field goals as North Carolina State moved to within one game of becoming bowl eligible while dealing the Terps' bowl hopes a blow. Barnette, playing in his final home game, moved to the top of the ACC career touchdown passing list with 59, two more than Florida State's Danny Kannell.

The Wolfpack (6-4, 3-4 ACC) got 324 yards through the air by Barnette (23-of-37 accuracy) in beating the Terrapins (5-4, 2-4) for the fourth straight time.

Wake Forest 19, North Carolina 3
Wake Forest moved within one victory of qualifying for its first bowl since 1992, playing solid defense and error-free football in putting away reeling North Carolina. Neither team showed much offensive imagination as the Demon Deacons (5-4, 2-4 ACC) snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Tar Heels (1-8, 0-6). Wake Forest didn't need much of an offense as North Carolina's woes continued in half-filled Kenan Stadium. The Tar Heels dropped their seventh straight and fell to 0-5 at home.
