Big 12 Roundup
Big 12 Game of the Week
No. 9 Nebraska 37, No. 21 Texas A&M 0 |
Dan Alexander and Eric Crouch each ran for more than 100 yards and a touchdown, and Nebraska recorded eight sacks to hand Texas A&M its first shutout in 11 years. Correll Buckhalter also ran for a score and Josh Brown kicked three field goals as the Huskers overcame a sloppy first half and remained in contention for the Big 12 North Division title. Nebraska (8-1, 5-1) is a game behind Kansas State, which visits Lincoln next week.
The Aggies (6-3, 3-3), who were beaten 51-6 by Oklahoma two weeks ago, were held to 118 total yards and fell two games behind South Division front-runner Texas. It was Nebraska's second shutout of the year and the third time the Huskers haven't allowed an offensive touchdown. A&M's Randy McCown, who was averaging 237.6 passing yards per game, completed 11 of 30 passes for 116 yards. |
Other Big 12 action
No. 6 Kansas State 20, Colorado 14 |
Lamar Chapman's second interception set up Jamie Rheem's record-setting field goal and the Wildcats survived a late Colorado rally to stay unbeaten. Mike Moschetti, shut down almost entirely by Kansas State's quick-hitting defense, finally found the range late in the game after the Buffs trailed, 20-0.
With 6:21 remaining, Moschetti connected with Jevon Green on a 64-yard touchdown pass play, and then just two minutes later, he hit Green on the left side and the 6-2 junior broke several tackles and got loose for a 70-yard scoring play, bringing the Buffaloes (5-4, 4-2) within seven points and silencing the sellout crowd that just moments before had been cheering news of Minnesota's upset of No. 2 Penn State.
Kansas State's first three-game winning streak over the Buffaloes was not secured until Moschetti missed on fourth-and-6 with 1:36 remaining. Kansas State (9-0 overall, 6-0 Big 12), which hurt itself all day with penalties and mistakes, next travels to No. 9 Nebraska in a showdown for the Big 12 North title. |
No. 11 Texas 34, Oklahoma State 21 |
Hodges Mitchell ran for 149 yards and scored three touchdowns, including an 80-yarder on the game's first play, and Texas took advantage of Oklahoma State mistakes. The Longhorns (8-2, 5-1 Big 12) scored 21 points in an eight-minute span from late in the second quarter to early in the third, building a 28-7 lead. One touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery, another came on an interception return.
Oklahoma State (3-5, 1-4) lost for the fifth time in six games and will need victories in its final three games to have any shot at a bowl game. Major Applewhite complemented Mitchell's running by throwing for 242 yards. He failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time in his two years as the starter (19 games), but it didn't matter.
The Longhorns defense held the Cowboys in check most of the time and sacked Tony Lindsay six times, knocking him out of the game for a while with one second-half hit. |
Kansas 45, Baylor 10 |
David Winbush scored three touchdowns and finished with 114 yards as improving Kansas handed Baylor its 11th straight Big 12 loss. Winbush, who had carried 81 this season because of ankle and knee injuries, had his fourth career 100-yard game, rushing 14 times. He had gained 402 yards and scored only twice going into the game for Kansas (4-6, 2-4 Big 12), which was coming off a near upset of Nebraska and a 21-0 shutout of Missouri.
Baylor (1-8, 0-6) last won in the Big 12 with a 31-24 decision over Kansas last year in Waco. |
Oklahoma 37, Missouri 0 |
Josh Heupel threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns, and Seth Littrell ran for two scores and the Oklahoma defense recorded its first shutout victory since 1993. Tim Duncan's 25-yard field goal with 6:26 left in the first quarter got the Sooners (5-3, 3-2 Big 12) started. Heupel added to Oklahoma's lead on the Sooners' next series, setting a conference and school record with his 24th touchdown pass of the season, a 5-yard toss to Littrell. Missouri slipped to 4-5 overall, 1-5 in the Big 12, as Oklahoma outgained the Tigers, 436-274. |
Texas Tech 28, Iowa State 16 |
Shaud Williams ran for 148 yards and scored twice and Kevin Curtis and Antwan Alexander made touchdown-saving plays for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders (5-4 overall, 4-2 Big 12) led only 21-16 when Rob Peters' pass was intercepted by Ab Turner, whose return gave Iowa State (4-5, 1-5) a first down at the Red Raiders 7. Two plays later, Darren Davis fumbled into the end zone and Alexander recovered for a touchback that preserved Tech's lead. |
