Big East Game of the Week

No. 22 Miami 33, Pittsburgh 3
Miami made sure it didn't have to rally again, consistently converting key third downs as Kenny Kelly ran for a touchdown and threw for another in a workmanlike effort. The Hurricanes (5-3, 3-0 Big East) rallied from deficits of 28 points and 13 points the previous two weeks, but that wasn't a worry after Kelly's 1-yard sneak put them ahead 10-3 in the second quarter.

Miami put away its 10th victory in its last 11 games against Pittsburgh (4-5, 2-4) with a 23-point fourth quarter. Pitt's offense shut down after David Priestley, who passed for 785 yards and five touchdowns in his previous two games, injured his right shoulder while being intercepted by Nate Webster on a first-down pass from the Miami 11 late in the first quarter.

Other Big East action

No. 3 Virginia Tech 22, West Virginia 20
Shayne Graham's 44-yard field goal as time expired lifted the Hokies, retaining their national championship hopes on a day in which second-ranked Penn State lost to slip off the pace. Virginia Tech appeared to have the game in hand after Shyrone Stith scored from 6 yards with five minutes left for a 19-7 lead, but the Mountaineers (3-6, 2-3) roared back.

A Tech fumble led to a go-ahead West Virginia touchdown with just a minute remaining, and the Hokies were able to take the ensuing kickoff back to only the 16-yard-line. The Hokies (8-0, 4-0 Big East) had struggled the entire game against the 19-point underdog, but freshman QB Michael Vick marched his team 58 yards in seven plays to set up the winning kick.

Syracuse 27, Temple 10
James Mungro and Madei Williams each scored touchdowns on short runs and LaTroy Oliver returned an interception for another score as Syracuse snapped a two-game losing streak in a difficult week. It was not an easy game for the Orangemen (6-3, 3-2 Big East), with three of their teammates recovering from a knife attack in a melee outside a bar after last week's loss to Boston College, concentrating on football was tough. Despite an emotional appearance before the game by the most seriously injured player, defensive back David Byrd, the Orangemen were unable to show much of a spark in the game, but still went on to beat Temple (2-7, 2-3) for the 14th straight time.
Navy 34, Rutgers 7
Quarterback Brian Madden rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns as Navy snapped (3-6) a three-game losing streak and dumped Rutgers to 0-9 for the season. Madden, who nearly engineered an upset over Notre Dame in his first career start last week, ran 30 times against Rutgers. He has rushed for 235 yards and three TDs since taking over for the injured Brian Broadwater. Rutgers needs a win over Syracuse or Miami to avoid its second 0-11 season in three years.
