Conference USA Game of the Week

No. 25 Southern Miss 20, Memphis 5
For the third time this season Southern Miss did not allow an offensive TD, while the Golden Eagles' offense did just enough to get by and keep their spot atop the Conference USA standings. All the offense Southern Miss needed came on a pair of first-half TD passes by Jeff Kelly. He hit Josh Gulley for a 25 yard TD and Todd Pinkston for a 57-yarder. The Golden Eagles still must play Louisville, which has a bye week ahead before clashing with Southern Miss in a game that will decide the conference title.

Other C-USA action

Alabama-Birmingham 36, No. 18 East Carolina 17
The Pirates (7-2, 3-2) held a 17-6 lead at halftime but could do nothing after the break, watching as the previously listless UAB offense went bananas, scoring 23 unanswered points to hand the Pirates their first road loss of the year. For all practical purposes the Pirates conference title aspirations are done. The Blazers defense even got into the act when Rodregis Brooks picked off a pass and took it back 91 yards for a TD.

Thomas Cox was the star for the Blazers, throwing for two TDs and running for another during the 23-point outburst. The win keeps UAB's bowl hopes alive. The Blazers (4-5, 3-2) close the season with games against Louisiana Tech and at Tulane. They need to win both to remain eligible for the postseason.

Air Force 28, Army 0
The Falcons (5-3) have now won 10 of the last 11 meetings with the Cadets (3-5) and claimed the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy for the fourth time in the past six years. Earlier in the year the Falcons handed Navy a 19-14 setback. With senior QB Cale Bonds still out with an injury, Mike Thiessen scored the game's only offensive TD on a 1-yard run in the second quarter. UAF also scored on a safety, field goal and 27-yard Corey Nelson interception return in the quarter to pull away.
Louisville 23, Cincinnati 13
Once on life support, Louisville's conference title hopes are alive and well after its victory over Cincinnati (3-6, 0-4). With a week off to prepare, the Cardinals will host Southern Mississippi in two weeks in a game that will decide the Conference USA title. With East Carolina absorbing its second conference loss of the season Saturday, there will be no three-way tie at the top and, if Louisville beats the Golden Eagles in two weeks, the Cardinals would own the crown.

The Cardinals needed to score 13 fourth-quarter points to put away the Bearcats, who lead at halftime, 7-3. The game remained in the balance until Bud Herring returned an interception 66 yards for the final Louisville (7-3, 4-1) TD of the game. The win was the fourth in a row for the Cardinals, and their fifth in six games.

Houston 36, Tulane 31
It was Houston (5-4, 3-3) RB Ketric Sanford vs. Tulane (3-6, 1-4) QB Patrick Ramsey. Sanford ran for two TDs while Ramsey threw for four. The difference was that one of Ramsey's TD passes went to the wrong team, as a 75-yard Kenny Hill interception return for a TD proved crucial in the Cougars' win. It was a game with slim bowl chances in the balance -- Tulane's are now a thing of the past while Houston's remain alive.
