Pac-10 Game of the Week

Washington 33 , Arizona 25
Washington took a major step toward the Rose Bowl, clearing its biggest hurdle by beating Arizona in the final home game for the UA seniors. Marques Tuiasosopo threw two touchdown passes for the Huskies (6-3, 5-1), who will be heading to Pasadena if they beat the worst two teams in the league -- UCLA and Washington -- in the next two weeks.

Washington basically put the game out of reach with a 17-play, 80-yard march in the fourth quarter capped by a 6-yard touchdown catch by Jerramy Stevens. That gave the Huskies a 26-17 lead with 4:14 left to play, and Anthony Vontoure picked off a pass by Ortege Jenkins and returned it 29 yards for an insurance score 24 seconds later.

Tuiasosopo, playing with extra padding on his bruised backside and limping around the field at times, completed 16 of 28 passes for 208 yards. Arizona (6-4, 3-3) has to win one of its final two games to become bowl eligible.

Other Pac-10 action

Oregon State 17, California 7
Nearly three decades of frustration is over. With the help of Roddy Tompkins' 41-yard touchdown pass and a fumble return for a touchdown, Oregon State clinched its first winning season since 1970, doing it in Dennis Erickson's first season as head coach. The Beavers (6-3, 3-3 Pac-10) are eligible for its first bowl game since the 1965 Rose Bowl. The Beavers struggled early against a good Cal defense, but got a break when late in the third quarter when Darnell Robinson intercepted a deflected pass. Tompkins scored on the next play for a 10-7 lead. Cal (4-5, 3-3) didn't get much going offensively after an 83-yard touchdown from Kyle Boller to Drae Harris late in the first quarter.
Arizona State 26, Southern California 16
J.R. Redmond, returning from a one-game suspension, rushed for 148 yards and scored three touchdowns as Arizona State extended Southern California's losing streak to five games, eliminating the Trojans from the bowl picture. Redmond carried 34 times and scored on runs of 1, 3 and 14 yards for the Sun Devils (5-4, 4-2 Pac-10), still alive for the Pac-10 title. USC (3-6, 1-5) struggled again on offense despite a change at quarterback. Senior John Fox, who lost the job to Mike Van Raaphorst in 1997, got the nod and went 15 of 24 for 124 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, but could not move the team consistently. Van Raaphorst played most of the second half.
Oregon 52, Washington State 10
Joey Harrington threw three touchdown passes and ran for another in his first start as Oregon (6-3, 4-2 Pac-10) clinched a winning season, the sixth straight for the Ducks. For nearly the entire game, Washington State (2-7, 1-5) was held to Rian Lindell's 25-yard first-quarter field goal. Backup quarterback Paul Mencke finally scored a touchdown for the Cougars when he connected on a 9-yard TD pass to tight end Josh Shavies with just 24 seconds to play. In a wild finish, Farwan Zubedi recovered an on-side kick for the Cougars with 19 seconds to play, but WSU receiver Collin Henderson then fumbled a pass reception and linebacker Nathan Naggi took it 47 yards for the final score of the game with only a second left.
