Independents Game of the Week

No. 4 Tennessee 38, No. 24 Notre Dame 14
Tee Martin threw for three touchdowns and ran for one and Travis Henry gained 132 yards and scored once to lead Tennessee. The Volunteers (7-1), aware that No. 2 Penn State had lost earlier in the day, took advantage of the opportunity to move up in the polls with big plays and a tenacious defense, ending a four-game winning streak for the Irish (5-4).

Martin's 43-yard heave to Leonard Scott in the back of the end zone and Henry's 40-yard run up the middle in the third quarter gave the Vols a 31-7 lead. That was too much even for the Irish, who had come from behind to win three of their last four games.

Other Independents action

Auburn 28, Central Florida 10
Once again, Central Florida was in position to pull an upset against a team from a major conference. And, once again, the Golden Knights could not close the deal, as Auburn scored 21 points in a two-minute span in the fourth quarter to avoid the upset. UCF held a 10-7 edge with less than five minutes to play before Jeff Klein found Reggie Worthy on a 16-yard scoring pass to put the Tigers ahead. Just 43 seconds later, Heath Evans scored on an 8-yard run for Auburn to extend the lead. Then Alex Lincoln took an interception back 20 yards and turned the once-close game into a comfortable win for the Tigers.
Navy 34, Rutgers 7
Quarterback Brian Madden rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns as Navy snapped (3-6) a three-game losing streak and dumped Rutgers to 0-9 for the season. Madden, who nearly engineered an upset over Notre Dame in his first career start last week, ran 30 times against Rutgers. He has rushed for 235 yards and three TDs since taking over for the injured Brian Broadwater. Rutgers needs a win over Syracuse or Miami to avoid its second 0-11 season in three years.
Louisiana Tech 58, Louisiana-Monroe 17
After opening with two losses to Florida State and Texas A&M, the Bulldogs (7-2) have now won seven straight, rolling to a 38-3 halftime lead en route to burying the Indians. Monroe had no answer for Tim Rattay, who threw six TD passes on the day, two them to Sean Cangelosi. If the Bulldogs are going to finish the season at 9-2 and make themselves difficult for bowl committees to snub, they'll have to do it on the road, as they close with games at Alabama-Birmingham and Southern California.
Middle Tennessee State 70, Tennessee-Martin 14
Doubling its win total, the Blue Raiders (2-7) scored 49 points in the first half against the Division I-AA Skyhawks, whose only win of the year came in overtime against an NAIA team.
