Pac-10 roundup
Pac-10 Game of the Week
|
Stanford 31, California 13 |
|
In one of the wackiest years ever for the Pac-10, a team that finished 3-8 last season, is winless outside of conference play and was ranked second-to-last nationally in total defense entering Saturday's game
is going to the Rose Bowl.
By winning the Big Game, Stanford won the league title and is going to its first Rose Bowl since the 1971 season. Casey Moore had two scoring runs for the Cardinal, including a 94-yarder early in the fourth quarter that was the longest at Stanford in 47 years.
The Cardinal (7-3, 7-1 Pac-10) overcame two touchdowns by Deltha O'Neal, who returned a kickoff 100 yards and a punt 58 yards for scores. But Cal (4-7, 3-5) had little else. The Bears, behind senior walk-on QB Wesley Dalton, making his first start, managed just 130 yards of offense.
Mark Soltau: Stanford makes it happen -- first Rose Bowl in 28 years. |
Other Pac-10 action

USC 17, UCLA 7 |
In a matchup of disappointing teams, Chad Morton rushed for 143 yards and John Fox threw for two touchdowns as USC ended its eight-game losing streak to UCLA. Fox, a recycled quarterback who lost the starting job two years ago and switched first to tight end, then to linebacker before starting the Trojans' last three games, completed 17 of 34 for 216 yards, with no interceptions. UCLA's Ryan McCann, a redshirt freshman making his first start, completed 17 of 29 for 204 yards, but threw three interceptions. A year after winning the league title, UCLA (4-7, 2-6) finished ninth. USC (5-6, 3-5) has one game remaining, against Louisiana Tech.

Washington 24, Washington 14 |
Freshman Paul Arnold scored on an 80-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, helping Washington win the Apple Cup
although the Huskies (7-4, 6-2) fell short of the Rose Bowl when Stanford beat Cal to clinch first place. Arnold, the prize catch in coach Rick Neuheisel's first recruiting class, gave Washington a 24-6 lead with 10:16 left. He finished with 126 yards on 14 carries. After Arnold's score, the Cougars got a touchdown on a 19-yard run by Adam Hawkins with 8:22 to go, but could get no closer. WSU (2-9, 1-7) takes a five-game losing streak into next week's season finale at Hawaii.

Oregon 25, Oregon State 14 |
|
Reuben Droughns rushed for 197 yards and a touchdown as Oregon clinched a second-place tie in the Pac-10 in the 103rd Civil War. Oregon (8-3, 6-2) finished with the same conference record as Washington, but the Huskies are headed to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego and Oregon is going to the league's third-pace bowl, the Sun. The Ducks led 22-0 in the third quarter, but Ken Simonton had two short touchdown runs to lead the Beavers (7-4, 4-4) back to 22-14 with 10:17 left. The Ducks held the ball for the next 7:35, however, and the 73-yard drive was capped by Nathan Villegas' 20-yard field goal with 2:32 to play.
Both teams are heading to a bowl game in the same season for the first time since 1948, when Oregon played in the Cotton and Oregon State the Pineapple. |
