Big Ten roundup
Big Ten Game of the Week
|
No. 10 Michigan 24, Ohio St. 17 |
|
Michigan forced three second-half turnovers and Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes as the Wolverines rallied to beat the Buckeyes, leaving Ohio State out of postseason play for the first time in 11 years. The victory gives Michigan (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten) an excellent chance of landing a berth in the Orange or Fiesta.
Ohio State (6-6, 3-5) won't qualify for a bowl for the first time since 1988, John Cooper's first year as coach. It's also the Buckeyes' first six-loss season since going 4-6 in 1988. Cooper fell to 2-9-1 against the Wolverines, including 0-6 in Michigan Stadium.
Brady, who led the Wolverines' comeback win last week at Penn State, completed 17 of 27 passes for 150 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown to Shawn Thompson and a 10-yarder to Marquise Walker. Anthony Thomas rushed 31 times for 111 yards, including a 1-yard TD run for Michigan. It was the fifth straight 100-yard game for Thomas and his seventh of the season. |
Other Big Ten action

No. 15 Michigan St. 35, No. 13 Penn St. 28 |
|
T.J. Duckett ran for four touchdowns as Michigan State sent Penn State to its third straight loss and took a big step toward playing in the Florida Citrus Bowl on New Year's Day. It marked the first time Penn State (9-3 overall, 5-3 Big Ten) has lost three straight since 1988, and the first time since 1914 that it has lost its final three regular-season games. The Spartans (9-2, 6-2) won despite squandering a 21-point lead in the second half.
Duckett, who was recruited as a linebacker but used increasingly as a clutch-situation ball carrier, sparked the Michigan State offense, rushing 22 times for 159 yards. He scored the winning touchdown with less than three minutes to play, charging up the middle on an 11-yard run.
Penn State trailed 28-7 at the half, but roared back to tie the score before Duckett and the Spartans scored last. The Nittany Lions probably slip to the Outback Bowl with the defeat. |

No. 17 Minnesota 25, Iowa 21 |
|
Arland Bruce raced 73 yards for a touchdown and linebacker Sean Hoffman knocked down a pass in the end zone with 8 seconds left as Minnesota escaped from Iowa City and the Hawkeyes' upset bid. The Golden Gophers won their third straight game and finished with a 4-0 road record, the first time that's happened since 1904. Minnesota (8-3, 5-3 Big Ten) also earned its eighth regular-season win, the most since the 1967 squad went 8-2 and shared the conference championship.
Iowa (1-10, 0-8) dropped its 13th straight Big Ten game and finished with its worst record since the 1973 team went 0-11. A 46-yard field goal by Dan Nystrom with 3:22 left, his third of the game, gave the Golden Gophers their four-point lead and left Iowa with one final possession. QB Scott Mullen, who completed 28 of 50 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns, marched the Hawkeyes from their own 23 to the Minnesota 5, but after a illegal procedure penalty, went 0-for-4 22 with 57 seconds remaining. |

No. 19 Purdue 30, Indiana 24 |
|
Vinny Sutherland returned a punt 66 yards for the go-ahead touchdown and No. 19 Purdue twice stopped Indiana on downs in the fourth quarter to beat the Hoosiers to capture the Old Oaken Bucket. Indiana (4-7, 3-5 Big Ten) had 329 yards passing by Antwaan Randle El and led 24-23 starting the fourth quarter.
But Sutherland took a punt by Drew Hagan and ran back for his second TD return of the season to give the Boilermakers (7-4, 4-4) the lead. A 33-yard pass to Jerry Dorsey took Indiana to the Purdue 12 on the next series. Three plays later, the Hoosiers were at the 3, but Levron Williams was tackled for a 2-yard loss on fourth down to end Indiana's first threat. |

Illinois 29, Northwestern 7 |
|
Two years after going 0-11, Illinois is going to a bowl game. Freshman Brandon Lloyd set up two first-half touchdowns with a punt return and a long reception, and the Illini used strong defense to beat Northwestern (3-8, 1-7). The Illini (7-4, 4-4 Big Ten), who went 0-11 and 3-8 in coach Ron Turner's first two seasons, became bowl-eligible last week with a victory at Ohio State, and are expected to become the league's representative in the MicronPC.com Bowl in Miami, probably against Virginia. |
