WAC Game of the Week

Fresno State 63, San Jose State 12
Billy Volek passed for five touchdowns and Josh Levi scored on a school-record 94-yard run as Fresno State routed San Jose State to clinch a share of the Western Athletic Conference title. Volek completed 22 of 30 passes for 311 yards. His five TD passes gave him a school-record 30 for the season.

After the game, Fresno State accepted an invitation to the EA Sports Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 18. Fresno State (8-4, 5-2 WAC) jumped to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Volek's 25-yard scoring pass to Charles Smith gave Fresno State the lead less than five minutes into the game. Volek also had scoring tosses of 3 yards to Billy Jack Pierce and 15 yards to Smith in the quarter.

Other WAC action

Southern Methodist 28, Tulsa 14
Josh McCown threw for three TDs and SMU remained hot, running out to a 28-0 lead before Tulsa (2-9, 1-6) scored a pair of garbage-time touchdowns. McCown was brilliant on the afternoon, completing 24 of 29 passes for 300 yards and an interception. His hot hand translated into a pair of big days for Mustang receivers, as Chris Cunningham (eight catches, 141 yards, one TD) and Cody Cardwell (10 catches, 146 yards, two TDs) each broke the century mark. SMU (4-5, 3-2) has now one four straight and will play next week against Texas Christian. Should the Mustangs win that game they would play at San Jose State in a game that was originally scheduled to be played Oct. 23. If SMU wins both games, they would be bowl eligible.
Texas Christian 52, Texas-El Paso 24
TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson broke the NCAA Division I-A rushing record, gaining 406 yards and scoring six touchdowns. Tomlinson carried 43 times and topped the record held by Tony Sands of Kansas, who rushed for 396 yards on 58 carries against Missouri on Nov. 23, 1991. The junior and first-year starter also set a single-season rushing record for the Horned Frogs with one game to play.

While Tomlinson is the first major-college rusher to gain 400 yards in a game, he is the sixth overall in the NCAA. The record is 441 yards, by Dante Brown of Division III Marietta College in 1996. Touchdown runs of 70 and 63 yards on consecutive carries in the fourth quarter got Tomlinson close to the record. So even with a 45-24 lead, TCU (6-4, 4-2 Western Athletic Conference) sent him back out for its final drive of the game, and he broke the 400-yard barrier with a 7-yard carry.

TCU plays SMU to close out the regular season next week while UTEP (5-7, 3-4) is done for the year.

Hawaii 48, Navy 41

Quincy LeJay picked off a pass deep in Hawaii territory with under a minute to play to secure the victory for the Rainbow Warriors, who completed the greatest single-season turnaround for a team that went winless the previous season. Hawaii, 0-12 a year ago, improved to 8-3 to surpass the 1980 Florida team, which won seven regular season games after going 0-10-1 in 1979.

Dan Robinson threw for 530 yards and five touchdowns, including the game-winning 26-yard strike to Dwight Carter with 5:21 to play, as the Rainbow Warriors took to the air early and often to beat the Midshipmen. Navy (4-7) rolled up 451 yards on the ground.

A 10-win season isn't out of the question for the Rainbow Warriors, who host Washington State next week in their regular season finale. Hawaii has already accepted an invitation to the Oahu Bowl where they will likely play the winner of Saturday's Arizona-Arizona State game.
