Pac-10 Game of the Week

Stanford 40, Notre Dame 37
Mike Biselli kicked a 22-yard field goal, his fourth of the game, as the clock expired to lift Stanford past the Fighting Irish, and probably into the Top 25 heading into the Rose Bowl. The Cardinal was flirting with the Top 25 heading into the week, and now 8-3 overall, they figure to move in this week as the Pac-10 champion.

For Notre Dame, it was again too many turnovers, too many defensive breakdowns, as the Irish slipped to 5-7 for the season, their first losing season since 1986. Stanford had taken a 14-0 lead in the game's first 90 seconds, but Notre Dame roared back, and it was Stanford who had to come from behind in the fourth quarter. The Cardinal gained a 37-29 lead before Notre Dame scrapped back to tie it at 37 with 1:32 left on a 5-yard scoring pass from Jarious Jackson to Jabari Holloway and a two-point conversion by Joey Getherall.

Stanford's final drive included a roughing the quarterback penalty on Notre Dame's Anthony Denman, and a 21-yard pass from Todd Husak to DeRonnie Pitts, which got the ball to the Irish 5.
Mark Soltau: Cardinal enthusiasm tempered by DT Willie Howard's knee injury.

Other Pac-10 action

Washington St. 22, Hawaii 14
With redshirt freshman QB Jason Gesser -- a Hawaii native -- making his first start at quarterback, Washington State broke a five-game losing streak by winning a tough defensive struggle. The Cougars kicked a late field goal, and then added a last-minute field goal after the Rainbow Warriors turned the ball over on downs.

The Cougars (4-8) spent the entire week in Hawaii and played their best game of the season. Hawaii (8-4), which equaled the greatest turnaround in NCAA history, from zero to eight wins, still heads into the Oahu Bowl to face Oregon State -- a team that beat Washington State, 27-13.

Arizona State 42, Arizona 27
Ryan Kealy threw two touchdown passes before leaving with an injury and backup John Leonard connected with Richard Williams on a 45-yard TD as Arizona State clinched a bowl berth. The Sun Devils (6-5, 5-3 Pac-10) secured the fifth conference's fifth postseason berth and will play Wake Forest in the Aloha Bowl on Christmas Day.
USC 45, Louisiana Tech 19
Coach Paul Hackett accepted a raucous Gatorade shower on the Southern California sideline, as his team culminated a 6-6 season. Chad Morton rushed for 84 yards and three touchdowns for the Trojans, who managed to stave off a losing season by winning their last three games. The loss likely cost the Bulldogs (8-3) any chance at playing in a bowl game. Tim Rattay completed 35 of 68 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns, but he also threw a season-high three interceptions, the last of which was returned 75 yards for a touchdown.
