WAC Game of the Week

Washington St. 22, Hawaii 14
With redshirt freshman QB Jason Gesser -- a Hawaii native -- making his first start at quarterback, Washington State broke a five-game losing streak by winning a tough defensive struggle. The Cougars kicked a late field goal, and then added a last-minute field goal after the Rainbow Warriors turned the ball over on downs.

The Cougars (4-8) spent the entire week in Hawaii and played their best game of the season. Hawaii (8-4), which equaled the greatest turnaround in NCAA history, from zero to eight wins, still heads into the Oahu Bowl to face Oregon State -- a team that beat Washington State, 27-13.

Other WAC action

TCU 21, SMU 0
LaDainian Tomlinson ran for 125 yards to clinch the NCAA rushing title and scored both TCU touchdowns as the bowl-bound Horned Frogs beat rival SMU in Fort Worth. A week after running for an NCAA Division I-A record 406 yards, Tomlinson needed just 110 against SMU to stay ahead of Wisconsin's Ron Dayne, the carer rushing leader, and Virginia's Thomas Jones. Tomlinson finished the regular season with a school-record 1,850 yards (168.2 per game) and tied another school record with 18 TDs rushing.

TCU (7-4, 5-2 WAC), which already accepted an invitation to play No. 21 East Carolina in the inaugural Mobile Bowl on Dec. 22, also clinched a share of the Western Athletic Conference title with Hawaii and Fresno State by winning its fourth straight game. SMU (4-6, 3-3), which had won four in a row, won't even play its last game, since the makeup of an Oct. 23 game against San Jose State cancelled due to a power failure, will not be made up because it has no bearing on the league title.
