We've put together a listing of five others we thought were in contention for the Heisman this season. But not to worry they'll be playing on Sundays next season, not Saturdays.

Shaun Alexander, TB, Alabama

Season: An ankle injury late in the season kept him out of one game and limited him in two others, costing him valuable Heisman visibility. But over the course of the season, he played big in big games for a great team, showing himself to be the most versatile back in the nation.

Stats: Rushed 302 times for 1,383 yards and 19 touchdowns. Caught 25 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns. Returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

LaVar Arrington, LB, Penn State

Season: With big preseason hype, he has been in the national consciousness all season, and he did deliver an All-American season. But a better defensive choice for the Heisman would be Virginia Tech defensive end Corey Moore.

Stats: 72 tackles (20 for loss, 10 sacks), 1 interception, 6 passes broken up, 2 blocked kicks, 2 fumbles recovered, 1 fumble caused.

Thomas Jones, Virginia, RB

Season: Made a nice late charge, finishing third nationally in rushing and putting together a strong case that he should have been one of the five players invited to the Heisman ceremonies.

Stats: Rushed 334 times for 1,798 yards and 16 touchdowns. Caught 22 passes for 239 yards and one TD.

Chris Redman, QB, Louisville

Season: No Heisman … but being the first quarterback taken in the NFL draft should be more than enough consolation.

Stats: Completed 317 of 489 passes for 3,647 yards, 29 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Peter Warrick, WR, Florida State

Season: He's the best athlete on the board … but his department-store indiscretions and subsequent two-game suspension knocked him from his Heisman-leading perch.

Stats: Caught 71 passes for 934 yards and eight touchdowns; rushed 16 times for 96 yards and three touchdowns. Averaged 12.6 yards on 18 punt returns, including a 75-yarder for a score. Also threw a touchdown pass.
