Triple Crown winners and near-misses

SportsLine.com wire reports

Only 11 horses in history have claimed the Triple Crown, capturing the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in the same year. Many others have come close, winning two of three. In the last three years, horses have taken the first two legs of the Triple Crown before coming up short in the third. In 1999, Charismatic finished third in the Belmont, while both Real Quiet in 1998 and Silver Charm in 1997 finished second.
