| He is 'Mr. Overtime' during the regular season with 11 game-winning goals in his career, but Toronto's Steve Thomas has never spun his sudden-death magic during the playoffs. Until Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against Ottawa on Saturday. Thomas showed a great burst of speed to catch up to teammate Sergei Berezin and convert a neat 2-on-1 pass into the overtime winner at 14:47. It was his fifth goal of the series. His fourth came at 15:30 of the third period when he drilled a slapshot off a Mats Sundin drop pass into the corner on goalie Tom Barrasso's stick side. |

| The Senators would have preferred that Tom Barrasso had more work, but they couldn't have asked him to play any better. The Ottawa netminder was brilliant in a 2-1 overtime loss to Toronto in Game 5, nearly stealing a victory for his team all by himself. Barrasso made several superb saves in the third period, before and after Steve Thomas tied the game, and then robbed Mats Sundin, Darcy Tucker and Garry Valk in overtime before being beaten for the winner. Ironically, Barrasso's great effort couldn't overcome a tendency that has developed in this series in which the team that has the most shots, loses the game. Ottawa outshot Toronto 38-31. |
