Other April stars of the night

No player faced as much pressure coming into Game 7 as Sharks goalie Steve Shields. The San Jose netminder had a horrible sixth game of the series, letting the air out of the balloon of a team poised for a major upset. Shields got over it quickly and was outstanding Tuesday night against the Blues. With his teammates building a lead, Shields made 17 big stops in the first two periods, but saved his best work for the final 20 minutes when the Blues unleashed a furious attack to salvage their season. He made several great saves in the third period, including a great glove grab off Scott Young and a quick kick stop off Jochen Hecht.

Owen Nolan, RW, San Jose Sharks

The Sharks believe Owen Nolan should be the league's MVP and few people who saw him play Tuesday night would argue. Nolan was all over the ice, helping keep pressure on the Blues in their own end and hustling back to help out in his own. Nolan took a lot of life out of the Blues when he scored on a long slapshot from just inside the center ice line with only a few seconds remaining in the first period, and then did a great job to help kill off a series of penalties the Sharks picked up early in the third period after St. Louis cut their deficit to two goals. Nolan's biggest play of his team's disadvantage was going down and putting his body in front of an Al MacInnis slapshot to clear the puck from the zone.
