Stars of the Night

SportsLine.com looks at the players who turned in the top individual performances in Thursday night's action.

Other April stars of the night

Ron Tugnutt, G, Pittsburgh Penguins

The Ottawa Senators traded goalie Ron Tugnutt at the deadline whispering that he wasn't someone who could take a team deep into the playoffs. Don't tell that to the Penguins. Tugnutt shut out the Flyers 2-0 on Thursday to give Pittsburgh its first playoff win in Philadelphia since 1989. Tugnutt, who opened the first round by blanking the Capitals, was outstanding, making 28 saves, and more important, giving up few good rebounds to the hard-charging Flyers. Tugnutt made some great stops in the first period, his best coming when he slid across the goal crease to get a pad on Andy Delmore's one-timer.

Wendel Clark, RW, Toronto Maple Leafs

Since he was facing the Devils, it was understandable for Wendel Clark to play like a man possessed. Clark and linemates Darcy Tucker and Kevyn Adams were flying at New Jersey, and keyed Toronto's 2-1 victory in Game 1. Clark took runs at several Devils players and made several great offensive plays to spark the Maple Leafs. His best move when he stopped on a dime crossing the Devils blueline, freezing the defense before doing a 180-degree turn and lofting a pass that Tucker converted into the winning goal.

Patrick Roy, G, Colorado Avalanche

Patrick Roy has delivered different messages to opponents throughout his career, but on Thursday, he was particularly clear against the Red Wings. Facing the NHL's best offense, the Avalanche goaltender served notice that he is ready for the series by shutting out Detroit 2-0. Roy made 25 saves to outduel Detroit's Chris Osgood, and post his 13th career playoff shutout. That ties Roy with Turk Broda for third on the all-time list.
