Early in the second period, San Jose's Jeff Friesen got loose in the Dallas end and began moving in for what looked like a great scoring chance. It ended when Stars defenseman Derian Hatcher got in the way. Hatcher turned Friesen around without a shot being taken, much in the way he and his counterparts on the Stars blueline kept the Sharks at bay all night. Hatcher took 23 shifts in more than 25 minutes of play and delivered four recorded hits, while making it a point to get in the face of Owen Nolan whenever possible. The Stars captain also helped seal the game when his slapshot from the point midway through the third period was deflected in by Brenden Morrow for the fourth Dallas goal.

Joe Nieuwendyk, C, Dallas Stars

Joe Nieuwendyk won the Conn Smythe Trophy last year because he scored six game-winning goals during the Stanley Cup playoffs. Nieuwendyk didn't score in Dallas' first-round win over Edmonton, but on Friday night, he showed why he is valuable in other ways. Nieuwendyk helped the Stars control the play whenever he was on the ice particularly for faceoffs. The veteran center won 16 of 21 draws, several coming in his own end late in the first period when the game was still up for grabs. Oh yes, Nieuwendyk scored his first goal of the playoffs in the third period, effectively ending any chance for the Sharks to come back.
