Charging

Back to glossary

Charging is called when a player travels a distance to violently check an opponent into the boards, the goalframe or in open ice. Referees have the discretion to call a minor or major penalty for charging. If a major is called for a charge that results in a facial or head injury, an automatic game misconduct and $100 fine is imposed. Charging can also be called when unnecessary contact is made with a goaltender outside his crease.
