LaVell Edwards will retire from BYU, effective after the season -- his 29th as head coach of the program he led to national prominence. Here's a glance at his career record and highlights:
- Won 1984 national championship with 13-0 record.
- Won or shared league championship in 20 of his 28 seasons.
- His 251 career victories rank seventh in major-college history and third among active coaches (behind only Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden).
- His career winning percentage of .723 ranks eighth among active coaches.
- Won at least 10 games in 10 seasons.
- Went to 17 consecutive bowl games, fourth-longest streak in the country.
- In 22 bowl appearances, is 7-14-1.
- Established the most prolific passing legacy in the sport, with his quarterbacks setting six of the top 11 single-season passing marks in NCAA history.
- His teams led the nation in passing offense eight times; total offense five times.
- QB Ty Detmer won 1990 Heisman Trophy while setting NCAA record with 5,188 passing yards.
- Two of his quarterbacks -- Steve Young and Jim McMahon -- would go on to win Super Bowls.
- Coached two Outland Trophy winners -- defensive tackle Jason Buck (1986) and offensive guard Mohammed Elewonibi (1989). Four Davey O'Brien Award winners (Jim McMahon in 1981, Steve Young in 1983, and Ty Detmer in 1990 and '91).
