U.S. basketball star Lisa Leslie answers questions from Sydney.
Question: How do you like Australia so far? Have you been there before?
Lisa Leslie: I have really enjoyed Australia! The people are very kind and hospitable.
Everything is very organized and much cleaner than I remember before back in
1994 when I came to play in the World Championship.
Question: How was adjusting to the time difference?
Lisa Leslie: Adjusting to the time was not that hard because we gradually changed time
zones before arriving in Sydney. We first trained in Hawaii, which is a four
hour difference from Los Angeles. Then we flew to Adelaide, Australia,
which was a ten hour diffence. As soon as we got off the plane we played the
French Olympic team that night. With that in mind, we adjusted to the
Australian time fast. We were sleepy!

Question: What is the atmosphere like? How does it compare with Atlanta?
Lisa Leslie: I have really gotten a good sense of the Olympic spirit here in Sydney.
Everyone is so excited and into the Games. It feels safe, friendly, and all
in good spirit, contrary to the Atlanta games. The bombing really put a
damper on the atmosphere and even though we won GOLD, the danger surrounding
those games will never be forgotten.
Question: What do you do on your off days between games?
Lisa Leslie: Between games I play cards with my teammates or just watch movies or TV.
Question: What were practices like before the Games started?
Lisa Leslie: Practices are still very competitve because we all want to win. Our
favorite part is five-on-five full court. That's when you bring out the
best in everyone. It's not easy playing against the best players in the
world everyday, but I would not trade my position for anything in the world!
Question: What is the Olympic Village like?
Lisa Leslie: The Olympic village is awesome!! It reminds me of my college days when I
lived on campus in the suites. Each country has it's own section and the
housing is divided by sports. We visited the track and field section and got
a chance to meet the sprinters. They were cool, but my favorite part of the
whole village was the dining area. The was a variety of food for every
culture in the world: Chinese, Italian, American, Thai, Greek...etc.. It was
delicious!!
Question: Is it true they're serving kangaroo in the Olympic Village? Have you tried it?
Lisa Leslie: I saw a lot of food at the Olympic village, but no one said anything about
Kangaroo!! No way, I'm not gonna try it, Let's get Mike, yeah, he'll eat it!!!
Question: Which teammates do you spend the most time with?
Lisa Leslie: I spend most of my time with DeLisha Milton, Dawn Staley, Teresa Edwards,
and Nikki McCray. We are always having a good card game of spades!
Question: This is your second Olympics. Does it feel any different?
Lisa Leslie: I feel much more relax and poised. I really learned a lot from the first
Olympics: Drink lots of water, get plenty of rest and give it all you've got on the court!
Question: Did you attend the Opening Ceremonies? What was it like?
Lisa Leslie: The Opening Ceremonies were so beautiful. It was an amazing feeling to
be amongst so many great athletes. I met some all time favorites like: Monica Seles, Venus and Serena Williams;
Marion Jones and Mia Hamm just to name a few. Of course walking out with the men's Dream Team is always a
highlight because those guys are great!
Question: Have you had a chance to watch any other sports? Which ones?
Lisa Leslie: I have yet to get out to any of the other venues, but I would love to
attend track and field or gymnastics before it's all over.
Question: Do you have any pre-game routine that you follow?
Lisa Leslie: They only pre-game ritual that I have is to nap before game time.
Question: Have you done any sightseeing yet? Do you plan to?
Lisa Leslie: I have gone to downtown Sydney with our team for dinner. We ate at the
Rock. It was very beautiful down there near the water. The best part for me were the five gold Olympic Rings
hanging from the bridge as we crossed over into the city.
Question: How are the fans? Are they cheering you on?
Lisa Leslie: The fans have been really good. They are cheering for both teams equally
in the arena. They truly appreciate good basketball, but I'm sure that won't be the case if we face the Aussies!
Question: Do you have any family or friends there?
Lisa Leslie: My mom is my only family member here in Sydney with me, but I'm sure the
rest are watching closely at home.
Question: Got a prediction for the WNBA next season?
Lisa Leslie: The Sparks will fly!!
