Voices from Sydney: Lisa Leslie

Oct. 1, 2000

More from Lisa Leslie: Sept. 26, Sept. 22, Sept. 20

Question: You met Australia in the gold medal game. Did the crowd have an affect on your game?

Lisa Leslie: Meeting Australia in the gold medal round was fantastic! We really jumped on them from the beginning and never looked back. It was a great team effort that will never be forgotten. We won a gold medal in the home team's back yard. We silenced the crowd big time!!

Question: How long do you plan on playing for Team USA?

Lisa Leslie: I really don't know how much longer I will play for USA. I have had a wonderful opportunity to win gold twice!!

Question: Some of your games have gotten pretty physical. Is that common in international play?

Lisa Leslie: Our games were very physical and that is to be expected in international play.

Question: In your game against the Slovak Republic you were both peacemaker and playmaker. Do you like your role as a team leader?

Lisa Leslie: I love being a team leader by my play and attitude toward the team. I believe I've earned respect from my teammates by being consistent everyday in practice.

Question: You said you wanted to go into broadcasting. Do you ever see yourself coaching at some point?

Lisa Leslie: I would love to become a broadcaster in the near future but coaching is something I've never really considered. I'm so serious when it comes to working out and improving and I just don't know if I would take the fun out of it for the kids.

Question: Which athlete have you been most impressed with in Sydney?

Lisa Leslie: I would have to say Cathy Freeman. She has endured so many trials. It was great witnessing her win in the 400 meters, not just for herself and Australia, but also for the entire Aboriginal culture.

Question: What do you think about the doping scandals in both gymnastics and track and field?

Lisa Leslie: I think it's really sad if any athlete feels they need to cheat themselves and their bodies with drugs in order to win. It's unfortunate for the gymnast who may have taken cold medication prior to her event. As far as CJ Hunter goes for track and field, it's hard for me to believe that he would do something that degrading to ruin his career. He had a good opportunity to win gold.

Question: If you could gain an automatic berth in any Olympic event, what you would you choose to participate in?

Lisa Leslie: If I could get an automatic berth in any Olympic event, I would have to say indoor volleyball. I really love to support the sport and it would be a fantasy fulfilled to actually play.

Question: What kind of camaraderie between the women's and men's basketball teams?

Lisa Leslie: The men's and women's Dream Teams are really close. We have had dinner cooked for us by some of the members of the men's team. We have had a great time together and have truly been supportive thoughout all the games, especially the gold medal round!
