| Field consists of the fastest 36 cars through time trials. Also, seven provisional starting positions based on 2000 owner points, for maximum 43-car field. The 43rd position is reserved for a past NWCS champion, if needed. If unused, it will go to the next eligible owner.

Homestead-Miami Speedway is a 1.5-mile oval track with 6-degree banking in the turns and 4-degree banking on the straightaways. The length of the frontstretch and backstretch is 1,760 feet. This is the second annual Pennzoil 400 Presented by Discount Auto Parts at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

- The NASCAR Winston Cup Series Leader Bonus is worth $40,000 this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Miami, Fla.
- Starting seventh in last year's inaugural event, Tony Stewart went on to collect his third win of the 1999 season.
- Three of the current top-five drivers in the points standings finished in the top five in last year's event: Bobby Labonte (2nd), Jeff Burton (3rd) and Dale Jarrett (5th).
- Should Bobby Labonte finish fifth or better in this race, he will clinch the 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship.
- If Labonte finishes sixth or better and leads one lap or finishes seventh or better and leads the most laps, he will clinch the championship at Homestead.

| Other Notes |
- With a 218-point lead over second-place Dale Earnhardt, Bobby Labonte remains in command of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series point standings. Labonte has been at the top of the points since the end of the NAPA Auto Parts 500 at the California Speedway (April).
- Only two of the top-10 and eight of the top-25 drivers in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series points standings changed point positions after this past weekend.
- With two races remaining, none of the drivers ranked in the top 25 have locked in their final points position.
- Dale Earnhardt leads by eight points over third-place Jeff Burton.
- Ricky Rudd, who is winless in 2000, remains in the top 10 in points, only seven points behind fifth-place Tony Stewart. Teammate Dale Jarrett, currently fourth, is 130 out of third place.
