Calder Trophy

The Calder Trophy is awarded annually "to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the NHL as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. Voting took place after the regular season ended and before the playoffs began.

Evgeni Nabokov, G, Sharks: One of the league's great stories this year, Nabokov is a former ninth-round choice who kept San Jose in first place until mid-February. Playing the game's most demanding position, the diminutive native posted a 32-21-7 records with a 2.19 GAA and a 915 save percentage.

Martin Havlat, RW, Senators: Playing on a great team limited his ice time and keeps his stats from being eye-popping, but Havlat may soon be considered the best player to break in this season. He scored 19 goals and 23 assists for 42 points in 73 games and was a plus-8.
 

Brad Richards , LW, Lightning: The junior player of the year in 2000 did not lose a step in the NHL despite playing on a poor team. Richards was the leading scorer among first-year players, notching 21 goals and 41 assists for 62 points in 83 games.
