The winner

John Madden, C, Devils: He is one of the league's best checkers and penalty killers. If you need someone hounded, this is the guy to do it. Madden scored three shorthanded goals to tie for the team lead and posted a +24 rating, fourth among Devils forwards.

Other finalists

Mike Modano, C, Stars: Modano was a first-time Selke Trophy finalist, posting a +26 rating, second on the Stars. He led all Dallas forwards in ice time per game (22:24), was eighth among all players in face-offs taken (1,791); posted a 52% winning percentage.

Joe Sakic , C, Avalanche: Sakic missed a clean sweep of his three nominations in his first try for the Selke. He tied for the NHL lead in plus-minus (+45), led all players in face-offs taken (2,292) and played an average of 23:01 per game, eighth among forwards.
