Joe Sakic, C, Avalanche: A great producer who spends a lot of time on the ice, yet rarely takes a penalty, let alone a bad one. Sakic won the Lady Byng in his third try as a finalist. He finished second in the NHL in scoring with 118 points (54 goals, 64 assists), tied for the League lead in plus-minus (+45), appeared in all 82 games and received 30 minutes in penalties.

Adam Oates , C, Capitals: Great playmaker, super on the draw and one of the best leaders in the game. He earned his sixth Byng nomination for leading the Capitals in scoring with 82 points. Oates finished fifth among NHL centers in face-off winning percentage (58.9%)and appeared in 81 games while drawing only 28 minutes in penalties.
 

Nicklas Lidstrom , D, Red Wings: He was among the Byng finalists for the third consecutive year and is one of only two defensemen in 20 years to be voted a Lady Byng finalist. (Brian Leetch was third in 1992). Lidstrom finished second among NHL defensemen in scoring with 71 points and took only 18 penalty minutes in 82 games.
