SportsLine.com recently spoke with Virginie at the Ericsson Open. Here is what she had to say:
SportsLine: When did you first decide you wanted to pursue a career in tennis?
Virginie Razzano: When I was seven years old I decided that was what I wanted to do.
SportsLine: How do you feel about the current level of your game?
Virginie Razzano: Being here (the Ericsson Open), I am obviously a very good player. If I continue working as hard as I am, I believe I have a chance to make it into the top 10.
SportsLine: What are your goals for 2001?
Virginie Razzano: I would like to play the French Open again and move up into the top 50.
SportsLine: What are the biggest differences between the junior game and playing against the pros?
Virginie Razzano: Players make more mistakes at the junior level and they are not as strong. At the professional level, the players are more physically and mentally fit.
SportsLine: What is your biggest weapon at this point?
Virginie Razzano: I am an agressive player. I like to move into the net a lot.
SportsLine: What do you enjoy most about being a tennis player?
Virginie Razzano: I like the atmosphere on the tour and meeting the other players. I am doing what I love to do. Instead of going to school, I am playing tennis and traveling around the world.
SportsLine: Who has been your favorite player to watch?
Virginie Razzano: Steffi Graf, because she's very nice and also Pete Sampras.
SportsLine: Who had the biggest influence on your game?
Virginie Razzano: My coach (Bruno Dagillon) helps my game to evolve and my parents were always there to support me.
SportsLine: SportsLine: Do you ever get intimidated by your opponents?
Virginie Razzano: I don't ask any questions. I am just there to win the match.
SportsLine: What are some of the sacrifices you had to make growing up because of the demands of your schedule?
Virginie Razzano: I was hitting six hours a day instead of going to school, but I always had an objective in mind. I was always motivated, so it was a pleasure for me.
SportsLine: Have you given any thought to what you would like to pursue after you retire?
Virginie Razzano: I always want to be involved in tennis. I would like to keep moving forward, but stay involved in the sport.
