DRIVERS TO WATCH
Dale Earnhardt Jr. -- Holds track record of 191.149 miles per
hour set last August in the Pepsi 400 qualifying; best
finish at the D-shaped 2-mile oval was 13th in this race
last June; won 1999 Busch race in an exciting duel with
Jeff Gordon (a rare Busch series appearance); since a low
26th spot in the standings at Bristol, Dale Jr. has gained
17 positions to ninth place and has scored the second most
points next to Tony Stewart.
Jeff Gordon -- Among the leaders in every Winston Cup category;
won the MBNA Platinum 400 for his second points win of the
year (also won the non-points The Winston); also finished
second three times and started twice from the pole; win at
Dover was 54th of career, tying him with Rusty Wallace and Lee
Petty for seventh on the all-time list; all 54 have been with
Hendrick Motorsports; Sunday, he has a chance to give Hendrick
its 100th victory; led 992 laps (22 percent) for most in the
series; has eight top-five finishes in all (three more than
any other driver) in 13 races; won the Pepsi 400 in 1998 but
never the KMart 400; in 1999, took off from the pole but Dale
Jarrett held him off late to finish second for the third time
in this event; started from the pole twice at Michigan and has
11 top-five finishes in 16 starts.
Dale Jarrett -- Tops the Winston Cup series in standings with
1,861 points, 50 more than Jeff Gordon; also first with three
victories and has two poles; edged out Gordon to win the
KMart 400 two years ago; that year, he set a race and track
record at 173.997 mph; also drove well at Michigan Speedway
in the later race at the track, Pepsi 400, where he won in
1996 and finished second between 1997-99; last year he was
fourth in both events at Michigan Speedway.
Bobby Labonte -- The 2-mile oval has been one of his favorite
tracks; has had three Winston Cup wins in Michigan and one
in the Busch series; continues to put out good efforts after
an early-season slump; has finished 12th or better in five
of the last six points races; started from the pole in the
KMart 400 last year and finished third; also third in the
Pepsi 400 in August last year.
Ricky Rudd -- A consistent driver this season, having posted five
top-10 finishes in his last six races; has nine top-10s overall
but without victory; best result was second in the Virginia 500;
was second to Rusty Wallace last year in the Pepsi 400 and
12th in this race; stands sixth in the points.
Tony Stewart -- Comes to Michigan Speedway as not only the
hottest driver on the circuit, but also the defending champion
of the KMart 400; average finish in his last six races is
fourth, including victory at the Pontiac Excitement 400;
improved to fourth in the championship standings, 158 points
behind leader Dale Jarrett.
Rusty Wallace -- Winner of four races at Michigan Speedway, three
in this event; last year, he finished seventh in the KMart 400
and won the Pepsi 400 in the return to the track later in the
summer; one of 10 winners this season, posting his triumph on
April 29 at California Speedway; third in the standings the
past three races.
