Games

A great transition game resulted in several fastbreak buckets, and strong performances from Southern California's Sam Clancy and Georgetown's Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje led Team 6 to an easy 86-59 victory on Wednesday.

Clancy had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Boumtje-Boumtje had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks. Arizona's Gilbert Arenas (12 points), Texas' Darren Kelly (11) and Auburn point guard Jamison Brewer (7 assists, 7 rebounds) also contributed to the victory.

Team 5, which shot a paltry 29.5 percent, was led by William Paterson's Horace Jenkins, who had 13 points and 5 assists. Austin Peay shooting guard Trenton Hassell added 12 points. ...

In the first game of the evening doubleheader, Brandon Armstrong's 21-point performance led Team 1 to an 88-59 victory. Pepperdine's Armstrong hit 8 of 13 shots. TCU's Ryan Carroll added 13 points, and Syracuse's Damone Brownhad 11.

Team 2 was led by Detroit's Rashad Phillips 10 points despite his 4-of-13 shooting. St. John's Omar Cook hit just 2 of 8 shots but displayed great court sense and anticipation. ...

Nebraska's Cookie Belcher had in 16 points and 7 rebounds, and DePaul's Steven Hunter added 14 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks as Team 3 used balanced scoring to capture an 84-80 victory. Cincinnati's Kenny Satterfield dished out 7 assists for the winners.

Team 4 was paced by Arizona's Michael Wright (15 points, 9 rebounds) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Michael Hicks (13 points and 6 rebounds).

Notes

College coaches are showing up in record numbers. Tubby Smith (Kentucky), Tom Izzo (Michigan State), Craig Esherick (Georgetown), Pat Kennedy (DePaul), Herb Sendek (N.C. State), Dave Magarity (Marist), and Duke assistant Johnny Dawkins were all courtside on Wednesday. ...

Duke forward Shane Battier, who's not playing here, showed up at the end of the morning sessions -- a strange occurrence. Players who come to Chicago strictly for the weigh-in usually don't arrive until Friday. ...

Michael Jordan was not at either session. He was rumored to be working out at an undisclosed site in the city preparing for his anticipated comeback. ...

A few players have been falling, literally. Nebraska's Kimani Ffriend suffered a concussion late Tuesday evening, and was replaced by Chicago State center Darrell Johns. North Carolina State's Damian Wilkins sprained his ankle in the Wednesday morning practice session. Tennessee's Charles Hathaway suffered a diabetic reaction and missed the morning session. He returned for the evening's second game.

Quotes

Washington Wizards director of player personal Chuck Douglas on what the team with the draft's first pick looks for when many top 20 players bypass the camp: "When you've been through this for a number of years, there's no expectation that the No. 1 pick will be here, so it's not disappointing in that respect. But while you must know who are the best players where you're picking, you have to have an awareness of the other players out there in case of a trade with your pick, or a pick you may potentially acquire in a trade involving a player. You certainly need to concentrate on your selection and who's available, but if you move back five spots or even into the second round, you need to be able in a split second to say who the four best players are and in what order. It's all part of the normal preparation process, and it's why all the camps -- Portsmouth, Phoenix and Chicago -- are all still so very valuable." ...

St. John's sophomore point guard Omar Cook came into Chicago fresh off a couple of impressive team workouts. As his value rises, so to does his play here. Cook has held off signing with an agent and reserved the right to return to school. After a game in which one scout thought he had elevated himself into the first round mix and established himself as the best or second-best point guard in the draft, Cook spoke about his play and what he's thinking about his options: "I thought I did well. I controlled play and my team. I didn't try to do too much, I just went out there and played hard. The competition here is very good; there are a lot of good guards in this camp. There's only a slim chance that I'm going back to school, I think I've played well enough."
