DRIVERS TO WATCH
Dale Earnhardt Jr. -- Had a rough time last year at Sears Point
finishing 24th; did some testing at the track and expects to
show better skills of road racing after also competing in
the 24 Hours of Daytona; even though has not reached victory
lane yet this year, the team is having an equally good season
compared with last year as a rookie; after 15 races, statistics
equal or exceed results from 2000 -- three top five finishes in
both years, two less top-10 scores this year than last, but has
led in 10 races compared to nine last year; also won two poles.
Jeff Gordon -- In a reversal of his victory a week earlier at the
KMart 400, he finished second to Ricky Rudd this past Sunday
at Pocono Raceway; has finished among the top two for the
sixth time in his last seven starts; remained atop of the
Winston Cup standings by 36 points ahead of Dale Jarrett; has
led 610 of 800 laps raced in the last three races at Dover,
Michigan and Pocono (76 percent); and now comes to a track
where he has dominated the past three years en route to
victories.
Kevin Harvick -- Tops the Rookie of the Year standings by 23
points over Kurt Busch; more impressive is his ninth place
position in the overall standings; won first career Winston
Cup race at Atlanta in March and has six top-10s.
Dale Jarrett -- In 12 races at Sears Point, he has just one top
five finish; did come home in the top 10 the past two years,
with sixth in 1999 and seventh last year; by finishing third
in the Pocono 500, he did not lose much ground to Jeff Gordon
in the standings; is 36 points behind; tied with Gordon for
the series lead in wins (3) and poles (3); has nine top-10
finishes in the first 15 points races.
Bobby Labonte -- Has recovered somewhat after a slow start this
year; reached the top 10 in the standings two races ago;
finished in the top-13 in seven consecutive races; top finishes
at Sonoma were fourth in 1998 and again last year.
Sterling Marlin -- Came up short in last year's race at Sonoma
by finishing second by a little more than four seconds behind
winner Jeff Gordon; it was his best result on a road course;
having a solid season with top-10 finishes in his last three
consecutive races; finished in the top five in five events
and is fourth in the points.
Mark Martin -- Looking forward to racing at one of his best
track on the Winston Cup schedule; in 12 starts at Sears
Point Raceway road course, he finished in the top-10 an
impressive 10 times; has seven top-five finishes, but has
only won the race once in 1997 from the pole; last year he
finished third behind Sterling Marlin and winner Jeff Gordon;
is 93 points out of the top-10 in the series standings;
finished in the top 10 in three of the last four races; top
finishes are fourth at the Talladega 500 and Coca-Cola 600.
Ricky Rudd -- Last Sunday at Pocono Raceway, the 44-year-old
driver ended his 88-race winless streak with a victory in
the Pocono 500 (the 21st of his Winston Cup career); his
previous win was on September 1998 at Martinsville Speedway;
has been one of the most consistent drivers this year; tops
the series with 11 top-10 finishes; has not finished lower
than 14th in the past eight races; improved from fourth to
third in the standings, 130 points behind first-place Jeff
Gordon; the victory also marked the first for crew chief
Michael McSwain.
Tony Stewart -- Ran well last year passing Scott Pruett on lap
68, but was physically ill due to the high temperature; he
managed to complete the 112 laps, but only in 10th place, an
improvement of five places from 1999; qualified well for both
appearances at Sears Point; finished seventh or better in
seven of the last eight points races highlighted by victory
at the Pontiac Excitement 400; fifth in the standings.
Rusty Wallace -- Some mediocre results in the last five races
have pushed him from third to sixth in the standings; is one
of 10 winners this season, recording his 544th career win
on April 29 at California Speedway; winner at Sonoma in 1996
and 1990; has eight top-10 finishes in 12 races at the track.
