1991: AP preseason, postseason college football rankings
Best climber: Cal, unranked to No. 8
QB Mike Pawlawski and RB Russell White led the high-scoring Bears to their only New Year's Day bowl since 1959, providing coach Bruce Snyder the launching pad to bounce to Arizona State. Cal beat Clemson in the Citrus Bowl to finish with a 10-2 record.
Taking a dive: Georgia Tech, No. 8 to unranked
Despite standouts such as LB Marco Coleman, DB Willie Clay and QB Shawn Jones, the Jackets had trouble getting re-started a year after sharing the national title with Colorado. A 3-4 start led to an 8-5 finish ... and then coach Bobby Ross bolted for the San Diego Chargers, leaving the program in a mess until George O'Leary took over in 1995.
