1993: AP preseason, postseason college football rankings
Best climber: Auburn, unranked to No. 4
Terry Bowden took over a team that was in NCAA jail, ineligible for a bowl game, and came up with one of the most surprising seasons of the decade. The Tigers ran the table, winning 11 in a row and conquering Florida and Alabama at home.
Taking a dive: Syracuse, No. 6 to unranked
Marvin Graves passed for more yards this season than anyone in Syracuse history (2,547), but the Orange's scoring touch eluded them in back-to-back October shutouts against Miami and West Virginia. Syracuse lost those games 49-0 and 43-0, finishing 6-4-1 and out of the bowl picture.
