Analyzing the components of Thursday's trade that brought James Baldwin to Los Angeles:
To the Dodgers:
James Baldwin, RHP |
 | | | James Baldwin(AP) | |
|
What's to gain: The front-line starter the Dodgers desperately need. Baldwin played a key part in last season's ascension to the AL's best record when he jumped out to a 7-0 start. He throws his fastball in the low 90s and adds two styles of curveballs. |
| What's to lose: An annual injury risk and hasn't pitched 200 innings in a season since 1997. Shoulder problems made him a .500 pitcher down the stretch last year and cost him the first three weeks of this season recovering from arthroscopic surgery. Even when healthy, he needs offensive support to win. He's a free agent at season's end. |
| What's his role: Likely become the Dodgers' No. 2 starter behind Chan Ho Park and take advantage of spacious Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers might try to re-sign him and let Park bolt with his $20 million a year salary demands. |
To the White Sox:
Onan Masaoka, LHP |
| What's to gain: A Hawaiian hurricane who has been compared to a smaller Sid Fernandez. He boasts a lively fastball and a deceptive delivery that proves particular nasty against left-handed hitters. |
 | | | Onan Masaoka(Allsport) | |
|
| What's to lose: The fact that the Dodgers promoted Dennis Springer to the rotation over Masaoka says plenty. His control is erratic, especially with offspeed stuff, and Triple-A hitters battered him for 87 hits in 73 innings. |
| What's his role: Masaoka is headed to the minors. He wants to start, but his wildness has limited him to the bullpen. |
| Gary Majewski, RHP |
| What's to gain: A talented arm the White Sox lost this spring in the trade to acquire Antonio Osuna. The 21-year-old has a good repertoire which looks more impressive when he has command. He ended last season as the 12th-rated prospect in Chicago's system according to Baseball America. |
 | | | Gary Majewski(Allsport) | |
|
| What's to lose: Majewski didn't have command in the Dodgers system, evidenced by his numbers at Class A. His 6.24 ERA is bad, his 103 hits surrendered in 75 innings is worse, and his 36 walks against 41 strikeouts doesn't help. |
| What's his role: Take advantage of his second chance in the Sox system and develop under coaches who didn't want to let him go the first time around. |
| Jeff Barry, OF |
| What's to gain: A journeyman outfielder batting .290 with 12 homers and 20 doubles in Triple-A. He signed with the Dodgers last December after spending the 2000 season as a reserve in Japan. |
 | | | Jeff Barry(Allsport) | |
|
| What's to lose: He's 32 years old and in his 11th minor-league season. He hasn't played in the majors since 1998. His career big-league average is .163. |
| What's his role: Enjoy beautiful Charlotte, N.C. Barry has no fit in Chicago's outfield considering all the kids at the position. |
