Freddie Milons -- New goals, new attitude

At first glance, last season looks like a disaster for Alabama receiver Freddie Milons.

All the preseason hype about All-American status, even a potential run at the Heisman Trophy, quickly evaporated in the reality of the Crimson Tide's 3-8 season and Milons' own lack of production.

But instead of simply being disappointed, the 5-11, 191-pound senior from Starkville, Miss., looked hard at what happened last year and used it to make himself not just a better player, but a better person.

"I've experienced it all now," Milons said.

"Two years ago, everyone was congratulating me, telling me how great I was. Last year, people said I had lost it, that I didn't have the heart or desire to make the big play anymore. I went from one end of the spectrum to the other, and saw people give up on me.

"I think it was a blessing. It made me mature in a hurry. I think I'm better for having gone through last year. And I'm thankful I have one more opportunity to leave Alabama having made my mark."

For his career, Milons has 116 receptions for 1,233 yards and three touchdowns. Versatility has been his trademark. He has returned punts and kickoffs for a combined 937 yards and two touchdowns, and has 28 rushes in his career for 232 yards.

His best game might have been the 1999 SEC championship game, where he was named Most Valuable Player without catching a pass. He ran for 116 yards and one touchdown, playing quarterback, tailback, and wide receiver.

In 1999, Milons set a single-season record with 65 receptions for 733 yards and two touchdowns. Last year, those numbers dropped to just 32 catches for 287 yards and one touchdown.

"I have learned," said Milons, who was awarded the team's Jerry Duncan "I Like To Practice" Award in spring.

"Too much success too soon can spoil you. Now, I realize it's not all about me. If the team is successful, all the players will be successful. If I catch balls or block downfield, it doesn't matter to me anymore. After last year, all I want to do is win."
