Having spent his college football life at Miami and Florida State, Mark Richt knows a great receiver when he sees one. Richt believes he sees a great one in Terrence Edwards. "He's an outstanding player who's only going to get better," Richt said. "He could do great things." Richt said Edwards compares favorably to Florida State's great receivers. "He's got a chance to be as good as he wants to be," Richt said. "He has good hands. He runs good routes. He's got good speed. He can leap. He's a leader, mentally tough, has good work ethic." Richt is eager to see how much better Edwards can be putting all his energy into playing the position. A quarterback in high school, Edwards has loved playing the do-everything role in which Hines Ward starred at Georgia, lining up at quarterback and even running back -- although, unlike Ward, Edwards seldom passes the ball when he gets a shotgun snap. Last season, Edwards' dual role increased after QB Quincy Carter was injured. It was no secret Edwards was going to get the ball. But teams still had a hard time containing him. "It was, 'Stop it if you can,' " Edwards said. With more depth at quarterback this year, Edwards should spend most of his time at receiver. And with the development of receivers Damien Gary, Reggie Brown and Durell Robinson, Edwards may see fewer double-teams. But his multiple talents might still be put to use in Georgia's new offensive scheme. "I'm pretty sure Coach Richt has some things in store for me," Edwards said. Edwards knows he can flourish the most at receiver, where getting the ball in the open field will showcase his athleticism. He caught 53 passes for 704 yards last season. But those numbers only hint of what Edwards could do in Richt's system that can feature individuals over balanced-ball distribution. Peter Warrick caught 71 passes in just nine games during his last season at FSU. "It's a system that's built for receivers," Edwards said.
