Analyzing the components of Friday's trade that brought Fred McGriff to Chicago:
To the Cubs:
Fred McGriff, 1B |
| What's to gain: A .300-hitting slugger on a club that has only one such player healthy right now. McGriff will join the Cubs ranked first in batting average and second in home runs and RBI. He's a sorely-need productive left-handed bat who can also terrorize southpaws. |

| What's to lose: Nothing, considering how little the Cubs gave up for him. McGriff's comments earlier this week hinted that he might retire at season's end. Other than that, the worst he can do is disrupt clubhouse chemistry by giving Matt Stairs and Ron Coomer more time on the bench. |
| What's his role: Stop the platoon at first base, bat behind Sammy Sosa and let him see more strikes. |
To the Devil Rays:
Manny Aybar, RHP |

|
What's to gain: An innings-eating reliever who can throw every day. And the way the Devil Rays are pitching, he just might. He's known for a flat fastball but a good slider. |
| What's to lose: A journeyman who moves on to his sixth team in two years. He's known for control problems and home-run balls. He's decent against right-handed hitters but lefties pummel him. |
| What's his role: Join Tampa Bay's bullpen, fire away and hope he can follow pitchers like Rick White by reviving his career. That player to be named later had better be good. |
