Analyzing the components of Friday's trades that brought Turk Wendell to Philadelphia:
To the Phillies:
Turk Wendell, RHP |
| What's to gain: A rubber-armed right-handed middle man with a nasty slider who thrives in pressure situations. He has made seven straight appearances over 8 1/3 innings without giving up an earned run. Right-handed batters are hitting .195 against him this year. There isn't a more intense non-closing reliever around. |
 | | | Turk Wendell(Allsport) | |
|
| What's to lose: Sanity, for starters. Wendell's an odd, superstitious one who doesn't take losing easily. He hurled his glove into the stands after the Braves plastered him a month ago. He has given up eight homers in just over 40 innings. |
| What's his role: Work setup for Jose Mesa and don Mitch Williams' old No. 99 for the Phillies, who boast 16 relief losses. |
Dennis Cook, LHP |
| What's to gain: A 38-year-old situational lefty whose situations have been vanishing. He has allowed a .193 average to left-handed hitters this year with a stingy forkball and slider. He comes to Philly having worked six straight scoreless appearances. |
 | | | Dennis Cook(Castoria) | |
|
| What's to lose: More relief decisions. Five straight seasons of heavy use have worn down the arm that won 18 games from 1998-99. He has worked just three appearances longer than an inning this season. |
| What's his role: Become a left-handed setup man in the Philly bullpen. |
Felipe Crespo, OF/1B/2B |
 | | | Felix Crespo(Allsport) | |
|
What's to gain: A switch-hitter off the bench who's 6-for-19 as a pinch-hitter with two home runs. He led the National League with 15 pinch-hits last season. |
| What's to lose: At-bats for the legendary Turner Ward. The Giants designated Crespo for assignment when Andres Galarraga arrived, but that's more a case of a deep bench. Crespo missed a month this year with a torn plantar fascia. |
| What's his role: Join a Philadelphia bench that includes Brian Hunter, Kevin Jordan and Tomas Perez. Of that group, only the switch-hitting Perez can bat left-handed. |
To the Giants:
Wayne Gomes, RHP |
| What's to gain: A former closer with a once-dazzling curveball. He's a durable setup man who worked 241 innings over the previous three seasons. When he gets ahead in the count with his low-90s fastball, he's tough to hit. |
 | | | Wayne Gomes(Allsport) | |
|
| What's to lose: Gomes can't control his curveball. When he falls behind, hitters wait for the fastball and pound it. His last 12 appearances netted an 8.74 ERA and led Phillies pitching coach Vern Ruhle to say Gomes' pitches have "lost their crispness". |
| What's his role: Provide depth in the Giants' bullpen behind Robb Nen and Felix Rodriguez. It's a great return for a pinch-hitter they had designated for assignment. |
To the Mets:
Bruce Chen, LHP |
| What's to gain: The southpaw regarded as Atlanta's next great pitcher a year ago. He looked brilliant at last season's end and had moments of greatness this year, including five starts of seven or more strikeouts. He's an effective flyball pitcher when he keeps his fastball off the middle of the plate. |
 | | | Bruce Chen(Allsport) | |
|
| What's to lose: Scouts' opinions of Chen have soured considering how many teams passed on him in trade talks. He was sent to the minors earlier this month after a two-inning, seven-run pounding bumped his ERA to 5.00. His ratio of 19 homers to 86 innings says plenty about his stuff. |
| What's his role: Reclaim his starting role for the club that resurrected Glendon Rusch's career. |
| Adam Walker, LHP |
| What's to gain: A 6-foot-7 lefty who put up good numbers but remained unheralded in a deep farm system. He has a 7-4 record and a 1.94 ERA in his first season at Double-A, giving up just 50 hits in 88 innings. He boasts an offbeat delivery, an upper-80s fastball and a good changeup. He led Phillies minor-leaguers with 15 wins in 2000. |
| What's to lose: He's 25 years old and spent three full seasons at Class A. He doesn't have a powerful repertoire for a pitcher of his size. |
| What's his role: Continue developing in the Mets' system and hope the New York hype machine earns him a call-up. |
