The name of Oklahoma State's quarterback is Asoteletangafamosili Pogi. Most people call him Aso. You can call him a record-setter. Pogi broke Mike Gundy's school freshman passing record last season by throwing for 1,550 yards. In the first 98 years of OSU football, quarterbacks passed for more than 300 yards in a game only five times. Pogi started six games and cracked the 300-yard barrier twice, including a 328-yard outing in his first start. But there are those who argue Pogi does his best work on Sundays instead of Saturdays. The Samoan-American quarterback gives sermons at churches on Sundays. He was booked months in advance to speak at the First Baptist Church of Weatherford, Okla., on Super Bowl Sunday. "I would put him up against any speaker I have ever heard and I have heard Billy Graham in person," said John Talley, a Stillwater-based Fellowship of Christian Athletes official who books Pogi's speaking engagements. Figuratively speaking, Pogi has already been to hell and back. When Pogi was 5 years old, his father died of eye cancer. Pogi's mother had to work two and three jobs to support a Lawton, Okla., household of nine children. When Pogi grew old enough to get into trouble, he found plenty of it. When speaking to youths, he acknowledges that he was into the drug and alcohol scene and "the whole violence thing." "I did a lot of things in high school that were typical of falling into temptation and falling into temptation is what I did," he said. "It made me who I am today. I wish I wouldn't have done it, but I honestly believe God put me in those situations where I can be the person I am today so I can have a testimony to share with young people." Pogi said sharing his faith means more to him than football games. If he keeps breaking records, perhaps the day will arrive when he preaches and plays on Sundays.
