Analyzing the components of Monday's trade that brought Rick Reed to the Twin Cities:
To the Twins:
Rick Reed, RHP |
 | | | Rick Reed(Allsport) | |
|
What's to gain: An all-star pitcher enjoying a career run. He's 15-9 since last year's All-Star break with a 3.48 ERA. He's much like Brad Radke, succeeding with incredible control of a four-pitch arsenal rather than power. He's a great athlete and a player of solid character who doesn't have a lot of wear for his age. |
| What's to lose: Despite his status as a late bloomer, the fact remains he'll turn 36 in mid-August. He hasn't pitched 200 innings in a season since 1998. His July 20 outing, a six-run disaster in which he didn't escape the second inning, was alarming. His numbers have grown worse with each month. He'll make $7 million a year for two more seasons. |
| What's his role: Take the fourth spot in the rotation after Brad Radke, Eric Milton and Joe Mays. Provide leadership to a young squad lacking playoff experience. |
To the Mets:
Matt Lawton, OF |
 | | | Matt Lawton(Allsport) | |
|
What's to gain: A multifaceted all-star and team leader who can ignite an offense from several spots in the lineup. He boasts leadoff-caliber speed, a superb eye at the plate, and Derek Bell-style RBI and run production. He punishes righties, hits to all fields and is tenacious under pressure. |
| What's to lose: Lawton isn't the power hitter the Mets need. He homered 21 times in 1998 but just 30 times in the 2+ seasons since. Lately, he hasn't been a hitter at all. His 7-for-59 second half included an 0-for-20 skid. |
| What's his role: Lawton hit extensively in four different lineup spots, jumping between leadoff and the heart of the order. He'll probably start out in the former. |
