DRIVERS TO WATCH

Dale Earnhardt Jr. -- In his first Winston Cup start last year at the Glen, he jumped into the top-10 early and stayed there until a transmission part failure locked the rear wheels and spun into the guardrail; the team managed to piece the car back together but only to have the transmission fail again for a 40th-place finish; won Busch race at the track in 1999; remained seventh in the Winston Cup standings following his fourth top-10 finish (10th Brickyard 400) in the past five races; won the Pepsi 400 at Daytona where his legendary father was killed in an accident in February; also has a pole this season and five top-five results.

Jeff Gordon -- Coming off a near-perfect week with a victory at the Brickyard 400 after celebrating his 30th birthday during the week; extended his points lead to 160 over Dale Jarrett, with Ricky Rudd third, 179 points behind; on Sunday, will attempt to become the first driver to capture seven NASCAR Winston Cup road-course events; is tied with Richard Petty, Bobby Allison and Rusty Wallace, each with six, on the road course win list; Gordon's six were consecutive; in eight starts at the 2.45-mile track, Gordon has one pole, three victories, five top-fives and six top-10s and has led 146 laps; also leads the series this year in poles (5), races led (17), average finish (10.9), 13 top-fives (no other driver has more than nine), laps led with 1,552 (1,053 more than any competitor) and is tied for most victories (4).

Dale Jarrett -- Jeff Gordon tied him for most wins (4) on the circuit with his triumph at the Brickyard 400; best finish at Watkins Glen in 14 starts was fourth in 1999; last year was seventh; back to second place in the standings after a week in third; 160 points behind Jeff Gordon; has nine top-fives and 11 top-10s; 44-year-old son of NASCAR legend Ned Jarrett.

Bobby Labonte -- Did well in the first road race of the year at Sonoma, finishing seventh; first win of the year was the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway two races ago; posted six top-five finishes this year, which positions him eighth in the standings; finished fifth in last year's Global Crossing at the Glen in upstate New York after leading three times.

Sterling Marlin -- A 25-year veteran on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit is having his finest campaign in recent memory; following last Sunday's runner-up finish to Jeff Gordon in the Brickyard 400 at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he moved past Tony Stewart into fourth position in the series standings; last trip to victory lane dates back to 1996 at Daytona, also the season he last finished in the top-10 of the championship standings; is 323 points behind Gordon, but just 163 in back of second-place Dale Jarrett with 15 races remaining.

Mark Martin -- The popular veteran is overdue for a win at the historic Watkins Glen road course; winless at the 2.45-mile track since he captured three straight from 1993-95; in the past five years since his last win, he has finished in the top-five four times, including runner-up to Steve Park in 2000; in addition to his 12 top-10 results in 13 starts, Martin is in the record books, tied with Jeff Gordon for most wins (3) and tied with the late Dale Earnhardt for most poles (3); holds track race record from his victory in 1995 with an average speed of 103.300 mph; top results of the year were fourth in the Coca-Cola 600 and Talladega 500.

Steve Park -- The New York native led last 26 laps en route to his first career NASCAR Winston Cup victory last year; held off Mark Martin over the closing laps to average over 91 miles per hour; one of 13 winners on the circuit this year, getting his second career win at the Dura Lube 400 in North Carolina; second to Jeff Gordon in laps led with 499; 11th in the points standings.

Ricky Rudd -- Dropped back to third place in the standings after a 39th place at the Brickyard 400, his lowest finish in the last 14 races; is 19 points behind second place Dale Jarrett; victory at the Pocono 500 on June 17 snapped an 88-race winless streak; leads the Winston Cup series with 15 top-10 finishes; was fourth at the road course of Sears Point Raceway in June and just missed a top-10 finish in this race last year, placing 11th.

Tony Stewart -- Is just as adept at turning right as he is in turning left on the ovals of the Winston Cup circuit; proved that with a victory at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, California in June for the first road-course race of 2001; also placed sixth at Watkins Glen the past two years; after a rather slow start to the season, he has picked up the pace and is up to fifth place in the standings following two wins and eight top-fives; trails leader Jeff Gordon by 323 points.

Rusty Wallace -- Another driver who performs well on road courses; has six victories on this type of configuration, including two at Watkins Glen in 1987 and 1989; two years ago, he started from the pole and finished third behind Jeff Gordon and Ron Fellows; steady in sixth place of the Winston Cup standings; was fourth in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis; one win this year was in April at California Speedway.
